Hi!
I was wondering if you would recommend any kind of effect combination to improve a fretless sound, I know that it's also about technique but listening to Pino Palladino I can hear that there are some effects there. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Johann

That's not to say compression and other effects (sounds like a touch of chorus in the Paul Young days) weren't added in post, but he's not really an effects user himself.
In his case, it's pretty much all about touch.
I've posted this video before but other than some compression I'm just hearing a fretless Stingray, his amp and Pino's touch. Oh, and some chops that most people may not realize he has. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWU2omQp8TY |

When I play my bass with just the wood sound I get what I want my problem is when I plug it, I can't make it sound properly...

Paul Young - Everytime You Go Away
Chris De Burgh - Lady in Red
I really like that bass sound, also the way that is played, and the bass lines :-)

It's a very transparent, musical compressor that doesn't add a lot of squashiness, so it works well with both basses.
The only other effect on my board that ever gets used with my fretless is the EBS UniChorus, which sounds gorgeous (chorused mwah is a thing of great beauty). Other pedals like phaser and any kind of overdrive/fuzz/distortion to my ears just take away from the beauty of the fretless sound. YMMV.

Personally, I think three of the coolest effects on fretless are octavers, delays, and reverbs. It makes them sound magical, lol. I need to get myself a reverb sometime soon.
