Effects neophite question about aphex 204

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is a really newb question.

If I get the Aphex, what is the configuration, do I go from my Eden RR 600 to the Aphex to the cab, or vice versa?

Neither. The 204 goes in the FX loop of the Eden.

If you go Eden => Aphex => Cab, be sure to send us a picture of the resulting flames.

On a serious note... Bongo's right. Use the effects loop for this one!

Ok, still a bit confused. From the Eden Mono Pre Tone Send/Return to the Input of the Aphex and then from Ouput of Aphex to?

Output of Aphex to the Return jack.

What do you mean by "Send/Return"? Is it a single jack and not two?

AH.

Okay, I see.

I'd try both loops just for the heck of it, but you'll most likely prefer to use the stereo loop. It's post-preamp, which is the ideal place for most rack compressors.

Anyone else have an opinion on where the Aphex will sound better, pre or post on the Eden?

Depends on how you like your EQ. If you boost the lows a ton, putting the compressor post EQ will mean you are passing the threshold almost all the time, resulting in a very squashed sound with "missing" or "swallowed" highs and mids. OTOH if you tend to EQ for more highs and high mids, you may actually be bringing the levels of those frequencies up to more of a "balance" with the lows (in terms of actual signal level, not how we hear it); in that case you will get a more consistent and natural-sounding response from the compressor post EQ.

Those are just two "extreme" examples to make the point that different frequencies have different signal levels, and the compressor will react to the stronger levels, so base your choice NOT on what we think, but on how it sounds to you when you try it, since it is entirely dependent on you, your technique, your tastes, your bass, the strings, the EQ/enhance/etc. on the amp, yadda yadda. It's all you.
