Question EFFECTS PEDAL PLACEMENT

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

I will be purchasing the following effects shortly and wondered if you can advise which order I should place them and why?

Diamond BCP-1 (Compressor)
Boss TU2 (Tuner)
T Rex Sweeper (Chorus)
MXR M288 (Octave)
MXR M82 (Envelope Filter)
Fulltone Bass Drive (Overdrive)

Thanks in advance
Sam

You'll probably get a ******** of answers, ranging from "Do a search!" (there are TONS of threads on this issue) to "Do this". Truth is, there are basic information to take into account, but in the end, you're the only judge. Here`s what I'd do with this set-up

BASS > tuner > comp > octave > filter > fulltone > chorus > AMP

This link can help understand a bit about effects order.

If using a tuner pedal as a mute, I like it to be last in line. On my old pedalboard I had it first, and had problems with a little line noise along with a flange or phaser (I forget which) making an annoying whooshing sound when I was muted. Complete silence with the tuner last.

Yeah, experiment. There are lots of cool 'accidents' you may stumble upon. No 'rules' will change whether or not something sounds good to you, but what IS important about the 'rules' is that you get an understanding of how and why certain effects interact the way they do. SO, as a good starting point, I'd suggest you try this:

- Boss TU2 (Tuner) (first pedal gives best tracking for accurate tuning and its buffer will help drive your signal through the other pedals - some of which are true bypass. My tuner is actually TB, so I keep it last in line and use it as a mute as mentioned above)
- MXR M288 (Octave) (as early as possible for best tracking)
- MXR M82 (Envelope Filter) (As early as possible for best tracking. I like OD's after filters/wahs, but some like them before - they react differently and it's mostly personal preference)
- Fulltone Bass Drive (Overdrive) (I like them after filter/wah, but before compression, so you get the sound of the touch sensitivity of the OD, before the comp evens out the volume levels)
- Diamond BCP-1 (Compressor) (can help even out the peaks the octave and/or filter may cause)
- T Rex Sweeper (Chorus) (I don't use a chorus, but I think these and most modulation effects usually go last, anyway that's where I like my flanger...)

Hope that helps,

-John

I wouldn't put a compressor in front of a filter. You're changing the dynamic range of the signal before it get to a pedal that works off - you guessed it - dynamic range.

I also like my drive before the filter, gives the filter a little more to hang on. Gives you some nice synthy sounds.

YOU SHOULD PLACE YOUR ACTIONS IN THIS ORDER:

1) READ THE FAQ
2) SEARCH THE FORUM A BIT
3) FIGURE OUT YOUR OWN ORDER
4) DON'T START A THREAD WITH AN ALL CAPS TITLE UNLESS IT'S SOMETHING NEW AND RELEVANT

Yup, my bad. It's generally filter then comp. Wrote the post with my eating glasses.

Not always true, depending on how your compressor is set. I run a comp in front of filters all the time- but my ratio is very low, and it works for *me*. It's all trial and error, until the whole thing works as you want it to.
