Effects you'll generally need a lot?

So I've been looking at a lot of different effect pedals and other than maybe a wah pedal I haven't seen a whole lot that aren't extremely specific and not really generally usable plus they're all really exspensive, any suggestion on somthing good to get right off the bat?

nothing... don't buy effects until you need or want a specific sound... once you have a sound in your head, try out as many pedals as possible to find that sound....

i dunno... that is my advice... just buying effects to try them is kinda silly... borrow some to see what you like, if you really want to start playing with effects, but have no vision...

i think effects are really dangerous if you have no concept for your sound, or sonic goal... they are a means to an end.

If you don't know what you're hoping to accomplish (read: sound like) with effects, don't buy effects.

Except a flanger. Everyone MUST have a flanger.

I agree completely with this. Don't go to effects, let them come to you.

Great advice. Run away, save your money, buy a nice bass, make sure you have adequete amplification, save for college, a car, a girl, anything. Run for your life.

When I first started playing I had a zoom multi-effects pedal and a bass wah. Then I lost it all in a fire and realized I never used the things in band situations, just for making cool bass stuff on my own. I currently use zero effects with the bands that I'm in.
