I have only heard clips, but i would defer to bongomania's opinion when it comes to any effects questions like this.

Sansamp BDDI(or deluxe), Bassbone or the Eden(not sure the name but it has compression built in, I think)

Really, go with WaldoNova's suggestions, I have a SansAmp (the BDDI's big brother, the RBI) and I love it. Owned the Metaphor for a couple of days, brought it back for a few good reasons : EQ doesn't do much, overdrive is thin sounding, compressor is NOISY AS HELL and too compressed to be useable. I'm a big EHX fan, most my pedals are EHX, but the Metaphor... yuck!
