EHX Bass Big Muff Pi Mini Review

Sign in to disble this ad
Just thought I'd share - I got my EHX Bass Big Muff Pi today and had about 1/2 hour to play with it. Quick review: I flat out love it.

Took about 2 minutes to dial in the tone I was looking for. Zon Sonus (active barts, jazz style) -> Bass Big Muff -> GK700RB -> GKRBH410 & SWR Big Ben. With the toggle on normal, tone at about 1 pm and sustain at about 2 pm, I got great, useable fuzz with plenty of bottom and nice but not overbearing high end sizzle. Kicked on my EHX Micro POG with the octave up on and almost crapped myself. Too sweet.

I had been struggling to decide between the Bass Big Muff, the SuperCollider and the 3xfx Fatman V2, and I am totally satisfied, especially when you factor in the cost savings ($70 vs $120 vs 180).

I highly recommend.

I just tried one of these out yesterday, and I'm probably going to have to get it. I've been using my black Russian Big Muff Pi for a couple of years now, and I like that a LOT, but the BBM just sounds so much fatter and punchier.

So, GAS list for me:
Pedaltrain PT-2
Tech21 Bass VT
EHX Bass Big Muff

I would say that the trio you mentioned is almost a non-compare. The Fatman is a wild noise destruction device with an angry distorted sidekick. The other two are much more basic fuzz offerings.

I agree with that - but what an angry distorted sidekick! Thing is, I would have bought the Fatman more for the distorted sidekick than the destructo-noise stuff. All of those pedals sound great (based on the clips that I have heard). I know a lot of guys on the boards are very specific about effects, especially fuzzes and distortions, but I am just interested in what sounds good, labels be damned!

Are you running the Micro POG before or after the BBM?

Are these true bypass, and can they be powered from a 9V adaptor?

I ran the POG before the BBM, and it sounded great. This weekend I will likely switch around the order and see what I like better.

I've been running my POG after my LBM, and it seems to work great. When I get the BBM, I'll be trying both ways as well. I had it following the LBM to induce more low end.
