EHX Bass Big Muff Pi users - I gotta question for ya!

I have a Sansamp VT Bass pedal. I want to get a distortion pedal that will layer a distorted signal tone over the tone I'm getting from the VT. I'd love to get a tone similar to the one in the attached clip, if I can. Will the Bass Big Muff Pi do this?

Is the 1/4" out a line-level signal?

I think it could give that tone in one of its subtler settings with the VT Bass. I own the Bass Big Muff and the VT Bass- if you'd like I can try to get that later on.

Oh, and I don't think you'll find nearly any normal pedal to put out line level signal through its standard 1/4" out- nearly anything with a footswitch is meant to go in front of an amp.

That would be great!! I would think you could get close if you set the Muff to "dry" and fiddle with the drive settings.

A Big Muff with blended signal can get you close to that tone (yes, the BBM can do a blended signal). It's what I've been using to cop Switchfoot songs for quite some time. I've been using a USA Big Muff through a Barge Concepts VFB, because back before the BBM we didn't have the convenience of a blend built in to our Big Muff.

if you have two (stereo) inputs on your amp then you can run the "wet" bass big muff signal to one input and the "dry" signal to the sans amp then to the amp. that's basically what i do (minus the sans amp) then i use the normal mode on the bbmp and use the volume knob like a blend to adjust the level of the wet signal to work with the dry... sounds like I'm playing two basses simultaneously!

im not sure if you would need a BBM to get that sound because I had to turn the gain almost all the way down to get somewhat close...maybe something on the overdrive/distortion side of things instead?

I should give some more information here. I am planning on running my bass through the Sansamp VT Bass pedal and then to the FX return on my combo amp. If I went with a distortion box to get the kind of tone I'm looking for here it would come after the VT and before the amp. Would that still work?

So, maybe a milder distortion? What would you suggest?

I have both of these pedals (and I'm home sick today ), so I just tried that exact setup. With my amp (Acoustic B200 combo), unity gain is at 10:00 on the VT, so there is plenty of volume on tap there. And with the BBM in Dry mode you have a lot more volume available from it as well, so that doesn't seem to be a limitation. Was able to get close the Switchfoot bass sound but not nail it. I'd imagine he's bi-amping dry + fuzz in that recording.

Thanks for trying! He's definitely biamping in the recording. I'm trying to get close without biamping. I might just have to get one of those Bass Big Muffs.
