EHX Bass Microsynth: How do you rate it as an octaver

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello to each and all and I wish you all a great 2011.

I'm already the owner of an MXR M-288 Bass Octave Deluxe and right now I'm thinking of buying an EHX Bass Micro Synth.
The EHX has two octave filters, one sub and one higher. The MXR has only the low octave. Will the EHX render the MXR useless or not. I've read a lot of reviews saying that the EHX doesn't track that good, while the MXR tracks greatly and that I can say from personal experience.
So I really want to know, if it's worth selling the MXR just because the EHX has a suboctave.
And if anyone uses both how do they blend?

Thank you all in advance and happy new year.

IME the BMS tracks almost as well as the BOD. As for the flavor, that's a matter of taste. I really liked them both but didn't keep either. My favorite octaver is probably the Micro Pog.

IIRC the BOD was a lot more aggresive and "growly" than the BMS solo'ed OCT. I have a BMS XO but also have a Boss OC-2. both work great for me. the BMS is a little bit smoother and tracks well for me as to be expected from an analog octaver.

My older version EHX BMS is not true bybass at all! Have no idea about the XO version. MXR BOD is much more versatile as an octave pedal and is true bypass I guess.

The EHX suboctave voice tracks just fine but it doesn't have much character on its own, keep your MXR you'll probably find you still have a use for it.

Thank you all for your answers. I was thinking of selling the BOD to finance the purchase of a BMS, but I'll try another way round.

When selling an old pedal to finance another it's always safest, IME, to hang on to the old pedal until you can really compare them. You can always order multiple pedals from MF and return the ones you like least (or return all of them and buy used).

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately MF can send only used gear to Greece (where I live). I'll try and buy the BMS without selling my BOD.

In the states there are a number of online music stores with good return policies, some up to a year.

Like? I don't know them, because in Europe we have others.

As an owner of an OC-2 and the BMS i don't think the BMS is very good as a standalone octave pedal. The octaves on it are great fot fattening up the sound but its not going to replace a dedicated octave pedal.

Thomann or Musik Produktiv have return policies where you only pay for shipping. Most European online stores do actually.
