EHX Bassballs for Freeze??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, I need a suggestion. For my birthday, I can choose one new pedal to get. I've narrowed it down to two pedals that I've wanted for awhile, the EHX Bassballs and the EHX Freeze. I've done all the research I can on these badboys, I just can't seem to decide which one I want more.

Bassically () I want to know which one would be more useful in a gigging situation. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Bassballs would get a lot more use gigging. I have had both and have never taken the freeze out of the house but it is a fun pedal.

I had the Freeze on my pedal board for a couple of weeks and never used it. I have more fun with it at home as I don't really have a practical application for it with covers. Haven't tried the Bassballs.

I use the freeze on a few slow songs at live gigs.
I'm in a 3 piece & the Freeze and a bit of Chorus makes a pretty cool "keys" sound underneath the bass & guitard ... you really have to be precise with your timing but it make for a big sound.

+1

It's quite a unique filter, if you're into that (I am). Funks in its own way and even more likeable when modded to have the trimpots accessible from the outside. Never had the Freeze but researched it a little and cannot find any use for it at this time

The bassballs is one of the most underrated fuzz pedals when the trimpots are set up properly.

The biggest problem is that most effects buyers look for up front bass effects and the flangey artifact laden sweep of the bassballs makes it sound unique and soon after that the honeymoon ends and you're stuck with a pedal that can't do much but sound pretty.

An incredibly versatile unit when set properly. Not the one trick pony that most people think it is.

When you set up the trimpots do it on the fuzz setting with the sensitivity up near full so you can set it up to be useful throughout the travel of the only adjustable setting. Dial back all of the unwanted upper sweep and dial in where and how the bottom opens up with that higher sensitivity and then find the point in the sensitivity setting you find that bumping bubble lower in the sensitivity and fine tune that lower filter so that you're not bound to running it full bore.

After you do that switch it to the clean setting and listen for any upper register artifacts you don't like (or dial in if you do like them) and you'll hear a marked difference that makes it all way more playable and musical.

I find the clean setting sounds scoopy but maybe it's just a sort of dry/out of phase character that cleans my tone up.

Either way, it adds another layer into the sonic spectrum that one can control electronically.
