EHX - batteries melting?!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've heard horror stories of EHX pedals melting the 9v battery inside them due to incorrect power supplies. (?)
Which EHX pedals take a normal 9v DC input and which one's take the weird 1/8 one?

Hmmm... Sounds like you're mixing up Voltage recquirements with the type of connections, which is either Boss barrel like or 3.5mm, what you called "the weird 1/8 one"], often called "mini-jack".

My guess is that;

- All pedals with the Bass Balls / Small Clone / Small Stone / Dr Q format need a 3.5mm jack adapter.

- All pedals with the Micro Synthesizer / Q-Tron / Memory Man / Electric Mistress format often recquire their own power supply, which Voltage may vary.

- All Nano Pedals format are Boss barrel.

- All pedals with the Little Big Muff / Mini Q-Tron / Stereo Pulsar and other XO vertical pedals generally are Boss barrel

- Pedals like the Big Muff / Pulsar / Octave Multiplexer vary in their needs.... 3.5mm or Boss barrel.

The type of connector and the voltage of the power supply have nothing to do with each other and the pedals that use their own supply don't take batteries. The only thing I can think of is that I believe some of the Micro/Xo/Nano pedals use positive tip supplies rather than the usual negative tip. I've never heard of melting batteries, but if you had a short in the power supply jack where it didn't disconnect the battery when the plug was inserted and the polarity was wrong or something else that made a direct path between the battery's + and - terminals then it could surely heat up quickly, but melt, I dunno about that.

That's an odd horror story that I've never heard.

Plus, you couldn't possibly mix them up. Your plug either fits or it doesn't.

And if you're using a power supply, why would you keep the battery in? Most people just take them out so they have a battery to use later, just in case.

Oh, and on a side note... sonicvi, all of the positive-tip Micro series pedals (Q-Tron+, Polyphase, etc.) use a 2.5mm barrel jack, so the Boss-style (2.1mm) barrel wouldn't fit anyway.

EHX's approach to power supplies is pretty foolproof, IMO, with some minor exceptions.
