EHX English Muff'n SOUNDCLIPS

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok so I've been messing around with this thing and finally found the time to do some real quick and not so good soundclips. Bass is a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass with passive pickups strung up with D'addario FLATWOUND strings, unlike my previous samples. You may or may not be able to tell but the strings are actually pretty dead. Ampeg SVT-3 Pro into and Ashdown ABM 115 so the rig doesn't exactly have a lot of top end. SM57 microphone.

Lower gain clip with my standard plucking technique I use a lot, which doesn't sound as wrong as you'd think with the flats:

Some lower gain riffing:

Single note pick playing:

Single note pick playing with a higher gain setting:

These clips actually sound quite akin to the EBS MultiDrive ones I did, which are also very buzzy. I swear the EHX isn't nearly this buzzy live, these clips are kind of a disappointment to me. With that rig, this thing is almost useless for recording it's so buzzy; these clips are ok, but I recorded more stuff that was so buzzy I decided not to add it to this thread... I had noticed some of the guitar samples for the pedal were really buzzy and I can definitely hear that now. I may still use this thing live because it sounds pretty mint there but for recording, the Fulltone Bass-Drive Mosfet definitely gets the call. Anyways, questions, comments, criticisms, all welcome.

What tubes do you have in your muff'n?

Where abouts is the gain knob set on these clips?

Those clips sound way more distorted than how mine sounds... but maybe it's because of the reasons you pointed out above.

I'm using the stock tubes and the first three samples have the gain just above twelve o'clock, the last sample is at gain 3 o'clock. When did you get your Muff'n? I just got mine and I think EHX may have changed which tubes ship with it stock, though I'm not at all certain of that.

Oh, and also I play pretty hard, which will tend to get you more drive out of a pedal as touch sensitive as the muff'n.

Ok,

That helps to explain it... I was thinking a lower gain was around 3:00 or so!

I bought mine used a few months ago ($100 on CL)... It has the stock tubes (12AY7s) in it as well, but I've been thinking about trying it out with some 12AX7s

On another note I think this pedal would sound absolutely killer with roundwound strings. I'm in the process of switching back and forth between rounds and flats so we'll see.

I'm not all that fond of the sound of the pedal but your licks were great. Very melodic and musical sounding to me. Cheers

Thanks. I gigged this pedal tonight instead of the Fulltone Bass-Drive Mosfet that I was using and it sounds awesome in my band. Very meaty and natural. 100% better than my clips turned out for some reason.
