EHX hog high pitched squeal

Sign in to disble this ad
hey all, i recently got an EHX hog, and it runs on a 500ma power adapter, but i got the pedal used and it didnt come with a power supply and am useing a onespot to power it.

now my problem is, when the pedal is on its own, its fine, but once i put it in a chain with other pedals i get a high pitched squeal, and i know i have enough power for it, but something happens with its in a chain.

i even tested taking it out of the chain but still putting power to other pedals and i dont get that squeal. only when its actually attached to other pedals.

what could be the problem? my first guess was the power supply but i dont understand why i would get a problem like the one im getting

Using my brilliant facilities of deduction, I would hazard that the problem is that it doesn't like sharing the same power supply with other pedals.

You're welcome.

My rule of thumb: NEVER place the big EHX effects like the HOG, POG, Bass Micro Synthesizer, etc. in a daisy chain. If you want to see another side of EHX's "quirkiness", just play around with their power sources.

The results are never good - those things don't like daisy chains, no matter how you jerry-rig your setup. Isolated-output power supplies or adequate wall-warts are the only way to go about it.

Although... I don't think an isolated-output power supply could handle the HOG anyway, since most of them don't output very much current per outlet. I think you just need to get a hold of the equivalent wall wart, or an official EHX one.

Hmm... I'd have to agree.

WARNING:Use only the 9VDC/500mA AC adapter supplied with the HOG. Do not use any other AC adapters. Using other AC
adapters, even those made by Electro-Harmonix, could cause harm to the unit, the adapter or you. The HOG does not use batteries.

DOH. I just got a HOG from ebay, and for some reason it's got the wrong dc adapter in the box
As you can imagine, I'm dying to try it, but I'm not really sure if it needs center negative or positive. If it's center negative, then I think I can use the L6 converter that came with my onespot, if not I'm thinking of cutting the L6 converter's cable to reverse the wires. So, what I need to know is if the HOG needs a center negative DC, and a confirmation that the L6 converter still keeps the polarity center negative and doesn't change it like for example the C35 1spot converter does.

Taking a look at the power supply for my HOG, it's a center positive, barrel negative plug with an output of 9V DC at 500mA.
Not sure if it helps any, but the part number for the wall wart is US9L-DC-500 & model number MKD-410900500

Actually, I found a photo of the adaptor it was supposed to have and it is center positive... I do have a center positive adaptor but it's only 400mA and the HOG needs 500mA, I shouldn't try it huh?

yeh thanks mutt, i had the adaptor model number, just couldn't find a close enough photo to see the polarity. found one on ebay a couple of minutes ago. the adaptor that came with mine is 9DC-500, without the L, which I guess means a different plug... beh.

Also, I'd suggest getting the official HOG power supply. I wouldn't try runing it off of a 1Spot unless you like runing the risk of frying your unit. (yes, I'm paranoid, but with good reason ala Boo's kitty incident )

Problem is, the greek dealer didn't have any adaptors last time I checked, and I will have to pay 1 or 2 times the cost of it in shipping costs if I buy from abroad... did I mention I'm dying to hear it NOW?

Well, as long as there's no kittens nearby, and you are prepared (physically, emotionally, and monetarily) in the event that your pedal should die, then be my guest to try it out. But I personally would not suggest it. I'd say it's in your best interest to find somewhere to get the correct power supply from. Heck, EHX may even just send you one for a nominal fee. IIRC, the other EHX power supplies run about $10 at most major shops.

yeah, but add shipping to greece to that, not to mention the time it will take... just called the greek dealer btw, they still don't have it. guess I'll check the german ebay or something.

when i got my hog it didnt come with a power supply so i used my 1spot adapter with the line 6 adapter and it ran just fine, then i found an adapter i had laying around that came with an electric sharpener and iv been using that for the past 3 weeks or something and still working just fine

Well, that's center negative if I'm not mistaken, and EHX says it needs center positive... I'm too scared I'll fry it at some point to do that. I think I'll go out and buy some center positive, >500mA dc adaptor later today or in the morning.

EXCEPT if the L6 1spot converter is center positive, which would make my quest much easier.

HOHO, I tried it with an energy check I've got, seems like it's center positive! I'm off to jerk around with my hog, bye bye and thanks!
