EHX Hog Tracking on a 5 String

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking into a HOG. I have searched through most of the HOG threads, and I have not found a real good answer to this. How well does it track on a 5 string? Specifically, I don't really care for the octave down thing or 2 octaves down as much as I care about the pitch shifting above.

I currantly have a AKAI Unibas. I love it, but I want a bit more to play with. It tracks very well down to the low D and then starts to fall apart, but I rarely go below D on the B string, and when I do I do not usually use the Unibass. If the HOG can do that very well, I think I am in love.

How low on the neck does it track?

Thanks!

Flawlessly.

I'm absolutely serious. End of story.

This is correct. The reason why it can do this is that the HOG doesn't actually "track" anything". It samples whatever you feed it, and then simply multiplies (or divides) it to output the harmonies you want to create. This is the only method that I am aware of that anyone has been able to perform polyphonic pitch bending. This is also why you will find that when using the higher octaves (esp. the +3 and +4 octaves) all of your string and fret noise will also get translated up those same octaves, and your signal will sound chirpy and artificial. Because it is literally bending EVERYthing you feed it up those same octaves.

The HOG is worth every penny spent.
They pop up used on HC more often than on TB. If you can't find it used, purchase it from a place that has a solid return policy if in case it's not your bag or you need your $400 back for any reason.

I second everything that cheap and cheif have stated.

yep. "Tracks" just fine on B string. Also very expensive and not for everyone. Buy used it you can.

IOW +1 to everybody else.

oh, and if you like the HOG and want to ditch that Unibass.... it wouldn't last long in the classifieds here.

Yeah, I got the Unibass from the classifieds here. It was hard to find, but I really like it. I would like to add some more functionality, and even some more highs to my "guitar" sound.
I bought a Pitchfactor used for $400 trying to do this, but I am just not happy with it. When it works, it is great, but there are some notes on my fretboard that it just does not track, and they are not that low. I am going to play with it again this weekend, but I am not real excited about it right now. The HOG seems a bit more simple to use.

Doe any of you have dimensions for the foot controller? I searched last night, but I could not find it.

Do you happen to have 'dead frets' on your bass? If you do, the same spots that wouldn't track on the PF will not track on the HOG.

I don't have the FS dimensions, but I would gather that it's about 8" x 7" or more.

No, these frets are not dead spots. My Unibass can track these frets fine.
