EHX Neo Clone clips !

Sign in to disble this ad
‘Evening,

Well, my first clip…. Here goes:

Basic review:
Very simple pedal, depth switch (from user manual: “controlling the amount of frequency change in the altered signal”) and rate knob (from user manual: “controlling the speed of chorus modulation”). Messing with the internal trim pot ain’t recommended. Much warmer to my ears than the Boss CEB-3. The Neo Clone can almost sound flangish or tremolo-ish with certain settings. As for my preferred settings (for now): rate knob around noon with switch off, and no more than 9 am if switch on. Can get similar sound to Neil Young’s Keep on rocking… bass tone (beginning of last verse) with the last setting.

Set-up:
Peavey Grind 4 str. (both pickups on @ full volume, tone knobs at 90 %) > Boss CS-3 > EHX Neo Clone > SansAmp PBDDI (on light overdrive setting)> Recorder (Fostex MR-8 mk II).

Not my usual chain, as I left a few pedals out of it. I would’ve also gone chorus last, but wanted to use the SansAmp’s DI, so I switched them. I apologize for the playing and unwanted noises (due to either a bad cable or the pedal order?), but at least it gives an idea of what this chorus can do.

Here’s the sequence:

"Off switch" demo (fingerplaying)
0:00 > clean (SansAmp and CS-3 always on)
0:08 > Enter Neo Clone, rate knob @ 9 am
0:14 > rate @ noon
0:21 > rate @ 3 pm

"On switch" demo (pick):
0:00 > clean (SansAmp and CS-3 always on)
0:09 > Enter Neo Clone, rate knob @ 9 am
0:17 > rate @ noon
0:26 > rate @ 3 pm

As much as I wanted to buy this pedal, I can’t say it’s love at first sound, but the more I play with, the more I like it. Is it because of the switch from the digital CEB-3 to the analog Clone… could be. The final test will be when I use it with my live rig.

Bass Player is reviewing in this month's (Entwistle cover) issue. Realistic, IMO.

Have you ad the occasion to compare it with a Small Clone side by side just to hear how they are different or not?

Unfortunately not. I bought it from Guitar Plus/Drum Bazar (St-Laurent & Metropolitain) and at that time, they didn't have a Small Clone in the shop. They did have a Nano Clone, but the HC reviews are so bad I didn't bother.

Does this have a significant low end loss or volume loss?

Timely thread as ive been thinking about getting one for ages.
Listening to the clips have convinced me to get one now. I tried a Nano Clone out and didnt like it but have read that the Neo sounds almost the same as the Small Clone.

Thanks Bassmike.

Your welcome, glad you liked it. It has a bit of low-end loss, so I'm looping it through a Boss LS-2 for now, just for kicks. Stills sounds great.
