EHX steel leather, knockout and #1 echo

Sign in to disble this ad
so I went into my local EHX dealer to see what of the new range they had, the only 3 I was interested in were the steel leather knockout and #1. When I tried them out though I was suprised IMO the knockout and steel leather, both of which have great reviews, sounded pretty crappy. Neither of them seemed to do a hell of a lot either, am I missing something? What exactly are they meant to be doing??
The #1 on the otherhand was actually really good, definately want one.

Also I found out somthing a little strange it turns out that EHX don't actually have a UK distributor so all EHX pedals in the UK come straight from ehx to the shops.

Just a little story of what I did with my day off

Dan

From what I hear, the Steel Leather is meant to be heard in a full band context. It's designed to help cut through heavy guitars I believe. I'm not surpirsed it would sound bad solo if that's the case. My full band amp settings sound too barky solo, but really good with two hi-gain amps. Similarly my favortie solo setting gets pretty well buried by heavy guitars. I'd be interested to see if the Steel Leather made my solo tune usable in a band context.

Steel leather sounds like dung on its own. It pretty much amplifies your dynamics in a mid-range set of frequencies. You play harder, and it bumps mids in above and beyond your slamming the strings. In a loud band mix you can use it to bump those frequencies and cut through. I don't have one but someone else around here said that it is a very useful pedal, but not a very cool pedal.

ok fair enough with the steel leather I would need to try it in a band situation but the knockout was like a really bad 2 band EQ pedal with a blend.

It's an ATTACK EQ, like it says on top. They work very well for adapting your "punch". Not really comparable to a normal EQ.

I got the Steel Leather earlier this week.
I'm not that amazed with it.
It is what it is, take it for what it is, don't expect miracles from it.
Just two knobs but you you have to twist them to that one point that it will make your bass sound a bit heavier.
And that setting is between a wide range of "is this effect on?" and "where is all that treble coming from?".

And it very much depends which bass you are using.
From my little experience from monday til now I think this pedal is useful for my "mellow-sounding" active bass.

I'd rather have a compressor actually. (for my main bass, passive)

You have to question yourself: do you need an attack enhancer?
