EHX Tube EQ Pedal: Any users? Love it? Hate It?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Fellow Talkbassists,

I was checking out the Electro Harmonix website the other day and saw the Tube EQ pedal for the first time. I am interested in adding some warmth to my tone and thought this could be an option. Any thoughts?

I play a mid 1970s Univox P-Bass with a Carvin B800 into an Aguilar GS212.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

I'm not sure how different the circuits are, but can't you use a English Muff'n for the task? I use mine on extremely low gain in about exactly the same application you describe.

The english muff'n isn't just a tone warmer, though; its an overdrive pedal. Yeah, it can give some tube warmth if drive is set to essentially zero, but then, what's the point of getting an overdrive pedal and setting drive to zero?

Personally, I haven't used the Tube EQ, but I watched the EHX demo video, and thought it was pretty cool. The treble and bass controls are pretty standard shelving-type controls, but the fact that the mid controls are fully parametric (i.e. separate knobs for center freq, band width and boost) is pretty darned cool. I'm not a tube-warmth kinda guy for the tone I go for, but I did think it seemed pretty cool

Not English Muff'n on zero exactly, but just a lower setting sounds really cool. LOL I just saw a picture of that EHX pedal and it looks exactly like the Muff'n...

Well, considering that both are the same price, i like the flexibility of the Eng-Muff'n now that my board's still in development. I can throw it at the end with low gain for the tube sound, or in the middle with strong overdrive. You're pretty much stuck with one application with the tube EQ. Surely, the parametric controls on the tubeEQ look better than the 3 band one on the Eng-Muff, but my EQ section does exactly what i want it to do. Maybe im not asking a lot from it.

All the tube effects by EHX use the exact same design, 2 tubes sticking out of a box with a heat-radiating shield.
