| EHX Tube Zipper: price drop

I recently encountered the EHX Tube Zipper again, and was once more impressed. It's all around great and the price just dropped to $200.
The underlying concept is pretty simple: envelope filter + tube overdrive. However, it can also self oscillate and make some very out-there noises using "trill mode" which introduces an oscillator modulation into the filter.
I find the envelope to be one of the easiest to use just in terms of being able to find great tones very quickly. Almost everything sounds great on this pedal and the manual makes it pretty simple to use.
The distortion aspect is where it gets a lot of fun as it lets you really emphasize the the frequency peak on what might otherwise be a fairly tame envelope filter. This lets you do pretty much any envelope filter tone you can think of, from classic slap and pop to synth growls. Having controls for input gain as well as post-envelope drive lets you really push the bounds of taste and noise.
The Tube Zipper also sounds very good as just an overdrive/distortion [NOTE: it is both a tube overdrive and a distortion where the input gain knob can overdrive the tubes before hitting the filter and the drive knob controls the amount of distortion after]. However, doing so is a complete waste of this pedals potential.
This is a definite GAS-inducing piece of machinery and I intend to pick one up as soon as I can get the money together. |
