Hi,
So I just bought an Electro Harmonix Big Muff on ebay. I've read good things about it, but the only time i've heard it is Anesthesia by Cliff Burton, and hopefully its utterly flat out there.
What should I expect from it? |

Its not a total raging, gain filled, tear your face off type fuzz IMO, but it certainly gets fuzzy non the less. It handles pretty much anything from Light(ish) to Heavy fuzz without the all out harsh, chunky attack of some other popular silicon based fuzz pedals (Tonebender + Others).
I think you will be happy with it They are a nice good all rounder.

And after using my guitarists Boss Fuzz and the Fuzz setting on my digitech bass processor I wasn't sure about fuzz. But I put it down to just those two effects. |

Sorry. Well, you can go from a very light fuzz to a pretty heavy one. Nice tone control - good range. Fairly versatile, although mine just stays on 'quite fuzzy' all the time.

I'll compare against a Tonebender again, as I currently own both: While a Muff can certainly get a raging sound, it stills sounds...'classic' for lack of a better word. Whereas a Tonbender can get to the point of practically beating someone around the head (in a fuzzy good way)

How about their ability to retain low end? I've read their good at it, but again, that's just reading. First hand experience is always better, fail that, second hand. |

My green one does quite well at retaining the lows and sounding pretty beasty. I keep the tone below 12 o'clock though and while it does lose a bit of low end if I really dial it up (I guess), its never really been enough to bother putting it in my blend loop as I don't use it up that high for anything more than a quick experiment.
I remember when I first got my green one. I dialed in the same settings that I used on my black one as a starting point. It near blew me across the room. The green ones have MUCH more volume and overall sound to them!
I know though, a lot of people round here talk about blending in some bass with their muffs and definately complain about low end loss. So... I guess you'll just have to try that for yourself and come up with your own opinion.
Which model did you actually get?

BTW, which version of the Big Muff did you get? They're all a bit different in terms of low end and tone.

KK25, still enjoying that one, eh?

Mine right now is my main tone other than clean. I'll always hold on to that one...my personal "deal of the century"
