Electro-Harmonix Effectology, Vol.17 Transforming Guitar To Bass
Or
"How Low Can You Go?"

In this episode I explore using just a guitar and effect pedal to create uncommon bass and drum sounds.
I show the individual pedal settings at the EHX forum listed below.

Hahaha! I love the use of the warranty card! The upright sounds make me have some pretty bad GAS for a Bass Micro Synth again. I'd like to see how well it would work with my fretless in that manner.

Mad Maestro
I would use a analog Deluxe Memory Boy or Man in full feedback put through a Big Muff!
Change the delay time and there she is:-)

Another inspiring episode. Achieving an upright bass sound through effects is a topic that comes up here pretty frequently, and you've come the closest I've heard by a long shot. How would you go around making this sound or a similar one with a bass, already being in the desired register?

Thanks Dan
There are a few things I would try using a bass that is already down in the octave needed.
The Hog still is a must as I used the Spectral Gate which strips away upper harmonics from the input signal.
I used the octave bend to drop the guitar into the bass range so just bypass that and see how it sounds.
You could also get tricky and try the octave above slider and drop the pitch back down to the bass range.

The Microsynth after the HOG did two things to alter the sound.
The first was it added a small bit of square wave or distortion to the sound.
The envelope filter would allow the buzz to be heard just for a short time after the note was played.
Kind of like the way a stand up bass string buzzes against its fret less finger board when plucked hard and then mellows out as the string dies down.
I think that is what really made it sound real.
It took some fooling with levels to get it right.
Please let me know what you find!!
Bill
