Electro Harmonix Soul Preacher Opinion...

No sir, I don't like it.

Very noisy. There is a loud hissing sound when the unit is turned on. The switch actually makes a huge snapping sound when you click it on, imagine if you had your amp set really loud.

Low end sounds like garbage. Starts breaking up as you increase the compression.

I guess this could be a fun pedal for players who use lots of effects and want a dirtier sound, but I need a compressor that's a little more on the transparent side. This isn't it. Glad I kept my receipt.

Yep, the noise was intolerable to me too.

I assume you didn't open up the pedal and see the trimpot inside.

IMO, it's unusable on bass unless you do. And when you do adjust it, the noise level is dramatically reduced, and you don't get the insane compression you're getting now. It's more transparent than it seems, although it does add a little color. But if used on the stock trimpot setting, it practically destroys your signal.

I can't emphasize the adjusting of the internal trimpot enough. That pedal is nuts unless you turn it down a lot.

Good call MysticBoo, thanks. I'm glad I asked before returning it. The noise went away with a slight turn of that trimpot. Now, back to playing.
