electronics question

Sign in to disble this ad
so i was wondering if its possible to apply distortion/overdrive to a specific frequency range? i would assume i can use capacitors for this? would it possible to build myself a sort of "crossover" that would function just to split a frequency range for a pedal? after typing this im starting to think i could just build a high pass filter to do the same thing......

the reason i ask is because i want to build a pedal (tube overdrive circuit) that splits clean signals, and applies distortion to one side at a specific frequency range and then combines the both with eq control.

any ideas?

Yep, that's all quite possible. You're mostly on the right track conceptually, so the next step is to start Googling.

If I pretend you didn't mention tubes, I'd tell you this: a regular distortion already has a highpass filter at the beginning via the input cap. Selecting this value to only allow the frequencies you want into the distortion circuit, then adding a clean blend, would give you what you want.

But, if you haven't built or designed any electronics before, I wouldn't recommend you start with a tube overdrive.

Paia sells a kit of Craig Anderton's quadra fuzz that you could use as a guide for what you are looking to do.
