Emulating "Simply the best" synth bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Meeting with new band this weekend and one of the songs is "Simply the best", which Tina Turner had a big hit with.
It has a very distincive bass synth sound, especially in the beginning. I have fiddled around with my gear, trying to at least copy the "feeling" of that synth, but with little success.
So far, "soft slapping" (expression?) a Jazz bass tuned DGCF through an Ibanez chorus is as close as I get. (Not very close...)
I have a Digitech Bass Synth Wah which is not useful for this song.

Any suggestions on how to create a passable imitation through a clean sounding rig? By the way, I also have a couple of rack mounted multi effects (a nice tc eletronics and a so-so Lexicon MPX100) for my PA + an EBS Octabass.

The intro bass synth, IIRC, has a piano sample. You could slap to imitate the tone.

If you play lots of 80's songs and want to recreate bass sounds, you better get a Roland guitar synth or learn how to play the keys (many bassists actually play keys to recreate synth basses). Most synth bass lines are very easy to play on the keys. Even an el cheapo PCM-based synth can reproduce lots of different synth bass tones.

No synth needed to reproduce that song live. I'd just give it a little slap and some chorus.

OK - thanks!

Slap + chorus is what I am doing right now. I will add some compression to make the tone and volume more consistent, too.

Keyboard groove might not be very hard, but I will try to stick to bass...
