If you head over to the effects forum, you'll find a wealth of information on all sorts of envelop filters.

I have the EBS pedal, also called the Bass IQ. To be honest, although I generally like EBS pedals, I haven't used this one much. I find it hard to get the sound I want, which is sort of a deep funky auto-wah (which I would only use in one or two songs anyway). But a lot depends on what you are trying to do.

By the way, EBS' website has a lot of good samples on it, so you can take a listen there.

I've tried a few different envelope filters. It would be best if you could give us a maximum amount that you want to spend, the amount of variability and control that you have over the filter, and any specific tones that you want to cop.

Currently I have 4 on my pedal board.

WMD Super FatMan
EBS BassIQ
EHX Enigma
DOD FX25B

I like them all. Want more. The EBS was my main filter unit until the Enigma and the FatMan came along. Although I still enjoy the BassIQ, it has pretty much been replaced by the Super FatMan. The FatMan sounds very close to the Enigma, but it has an internal volume pot to adjust the output....excellent feature! Something I wish the Enigma had. I just recently picked up a near new DOD FX25B, it does have its own vibe to it and a sound I can't duplicate with any other filters I own.

For a classic, quacky filter sound, or even a more subtle one, the BassIQ is fantastic. I prefer it out of the filters I've tried that do that sort of thing (including a Groove Regulator), so i'd say that's a good pick--and it's dead simple to use.

To chuck3, if you want a fat autowah, the Mad Professor Snow White Autowah will give you exactly that. It's not cheap, but I was after the same thing, and this is where I found it. I posted clips of it a couple of months ago, if you wonder how it sounds on bass.

I'm currently using an Octavius Squeezer, Meatwad, Bassballs and (more of an ADSR envelope-triggered filter) an EHX BMS. To be fair all of them fill roles other than the typical "auto-wah" sound and apart from the Bassballs none of them are cheap.

Of the other envelope filters I've owned (incl. DOD FX25, MXR Bass Auto Q, Maxon AF9), the EHX Q-Tron was my favourite and stayed on my board the longest. As a '70s funk filter it's great, and good value too.

Env filters are a wide range between brands, and even within the same brand sometimes. I've not had as many as some on here, maybe 6 or so, but each was very different from the next. What I settled in with, for nearly 3 yrs now, (a new record), is a Menatone MailBomb. Not easy to find, but some of the craziest, yet contollable filter sounds ever, for my money. Be prepared, whatever you get as your "first" filter, it won't be your last.

I have a 3Leaf Groove Regulator and highly recommend it. It's everything that was great about the old Lovetone Meatball, minus all the extra knobs and hassle. It can do a lot of neat things on its own, and do even more when you put another pedal in its effects loop. It also doesn't hit volume spikes as hard as some other envelope filters. It's a really cool pedal if you are willing to spend the money for it.

I've been using a Tonefactor (now Mojohand) 442 for almost 3 years. It's filled all my filter needs. I enjoy it's simplicity.

Smurf, thanks for the heads-up about the Snow White. To be honest, I hadn't even heard of it, but it looks/sounds closer to what I want than the EBS.

Note to self - I'm talking to "Smurf" about "Snow White" - only on TB.

Moogerfooger Lowpass 101
The only drawback but not visually is that its large.
Looks great and built great. Well worth the money as it made so well. But I love how it can take 4 expression pedals as you can really venture into other sounds with or without the addition of other effects. But now it becomes bigger and bigger and filling up your pedalboard. I have the ebs and its a great pedal also. I find it easy to use. Its also on my pedalboard. But the Moogerfooger is more transparent. For the way its built and what you get its worth it, but still expensive.

+1, I'm hanging onto mine. I've been meaning to mod it for expression pedal usage as I've not found a wah that sounds as good as this pedal!
