I've been looking into getting an envelope filter for a while, and most recently have seen the Micro Q-Tron and Doctor Q that seemed nice. I don't really want to spend over $100. What do you reccommend?

Other than that; you are going to be hard pressed to find even a used envelope filter in that price range. |

byoc filter (dod 440 clone)
bassballs is one trick pony imho: just that sound, maybe two if you like it a bit distorted
byoc is way more subtle but i'm diggin' it

Perhaps due to it being the guitar version. I'd consider giving the BSW a go though. |

These are the most musical filters I've ever used

It's a totally different kind of filter, set up to give a vocal quality rather than the familiar quack you get from most envelope filters. Mine's been on my board for over a year but if you're only going to have one envelope filter then that isn't the one to get.
The cheaper Q-Trons are pretty good, the FX-25 is pretty cool but I always thought sounded a bit heavy-handed. The BYOC 440 is too subtle IMO. I've owned all of them at some point. |

One of the few filters designed specifically for bass, it may not deliver silly highpass modes, but it is flexible, practical and suited to a lot of music styles (from funk to rock to dub to whatever). |

I have an oddball Menatone MailBomb that I'd never part with, and use a total of 3 filters on my board. Different flavors.

Before that I had a Moog MF-101, but being close to $300 it's out of your price range.
For under $100, your best bets would be a DOD FX25B, BYOC DOD 440, or a used EHX Q-Tron. If you get lucky and see a used Maxon or EBS for that price I'd jump on it. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
