Envelope filters in non-funk situations?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, I play a lot of stuff but I consider myself a jazz/funk player for the most part. I just would like to know if you don't use your envelope filter for funk how would you use it? I honestly, don't think I've ever heard an envelope used in any other situation on bass (maybe a few fusion tracks). I know there are filters that arent exactly funky out there (Subdecay Prometheus, Zcat Step) but I can't recall hearing them anywhere. Could anyone post a few clips that show them on bass in areas of music other than funk?

"Blues Jam" by Rollins Band from "the End Of Silence" CD is a great example of it being used on crushingly heavy rock. I believe it's used on the whole album but that track immediately comes to mind. Very heavy sound.

Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz. I guess he is borderline funk, but I consider this to be a rock track.

Using my Boss FT-2 along with my ODB-3 makes one of my favorite sounds ever... but will probably not be confused for funky!

I would never call No Doubt's Spiderweb funky, and Tom Dumont uses a DOD FX-25 on it. Granted, he's the guitarist, but...

I used an envelope-controlled filter for years in Debris (http://debris.rednotebook.org) and we got called a lot of things but "funky" was rarely one of them! Think avant-jazz comprovisation meets early 20th Century chamber music meets noise-prog.

Also, check out the much maligned Yes album Tormato, where Chris Squire uses a ton of envelope-controlled harmonizer on most tunes. Not quite the full-on "blarp" of a Mutron, but lots of similar duck quack attacks...and definitely not funky.

+1 to Rollins Band. They are playing heavy rock even the bass tracks are funky out of context. Bass will sound funky regardless of the setting, it's the rest of the band that will determine how everyone interprets it.

Octave Fuzz and Filter used in a lot of synthy sounding stuff.

I can get a pretty convincing All Alone (Gorillaz) Melody out of that threesome.

I really like the way Squire uses that harmonizer. But man! As you said, it's on almost every song, like he got a new toy and made it his signature sound.

Big Chris Squire fan though. Sorry for the hijack.

Black Sabbath - NIB - crazy distorted wah tone... not exactly an envelope filter, but close enough I suppose.

Also, check out some Al Cisneros stuff. He's more famous for Om and Sleep, but he uses an envelope filter on Shrinebuilder's "The Architect" (during the outro).

"Rock" is just a catch-all term for music that isn't enough of anything. Like how Lenny Kravitz isn't funky enough.

The Velorium Camper 3: Al The Killer by Coheed and Cambria
Not the greatest quality, but it's fast prog rock with an envelope filter on the bass.

Closer by Nine Inch Nails. For years I was sure that the bassline was a synth (and it may still be) but I was able to nail that tone with my Q-tron+ set just perfect.
