EQ before or after Comp?

Advice please

I have a fairly simple setup. I play into an MIE Ashdown ABM 500 and a SVT 8x10 pro cab. I have never been copletely satisfied with the preamp in the ABM, though the power amp easily has the power to drive the cab and it's darned reliable.

What I really want is a small pedal setup that will blow a great sound into the amp and the FOH as well as be usefull in the studio. My current setup is an Aguilar Tonehammer, a Mad Professor Forest Green Compressor/sustainer and a standard Boss TU-2. I am also getting a MXR M-108 for extra tweaking options. What I am wondering is if I should compress the signal before or after the EQ. My gut tells me after, to get the full fequency range into the compressor. On the other hand, my G&L L1500 has a pretty hot signal which I intend to control with the seperate in/out volumes on the MXR, and then the compressor might have a little less to work with.

From what I understand the Mad Professor pedals aren't well known in the US, so here's a link for some info.

I tend to use it on low settings 'cause it's quite powerfull, but it sounds great.

Any advice would be appreciated

As you said, the EQ could be used to control the levels from the bass into the comp; that's the only "big difference" I see.

It depends on what you're trying to achieve; EQ>Comp and Comp>EQ are both legitimately useful configurations, but they respond differently and yield different results.

For bass guitar, especially in an onstage rig, I mostly lean towards Comp>EQ because I'm just using the compressor to even out the dynamics and then the equalizer for whatever tone shaping is desired.

When you hook them up EQ>Comp, they become more of an interactive system, because now the EQ is determining not just your tone shaping but also how the Compressor will behave.

Thanks, this was precisely the kind of short and precis answer I was hoping for. I guess I will be going with your first proposition in most situations, might fool around with the second as well though. I guess ears are the best tool here.
