EQ Pedal in Effects Loop?

Sign in to disble this ad
TBers -

I admit to knowing nothing about effects and effects loops because through some act of the low-end gods I've never used them in more than 30 years of bassing. So my questions may seem simplistic and the answers perhaps obvious. Be patient, dear, wise friends.

Question is: is it OK/effective to insert a Boss GEB-7 EQ pedal in my amp's post-EQ effects loop?

My amp can use a little fine tuning in the mids.

Thanks muchly.

the EQ would work better if you put it between the bass and amp, not in the fx loop.

the fx loop works at "line level" which is a much louder signal than your bass puts out. the EQ pedal will be designed to work at instrument level. it wont damage the EQ if you put it in the effects loop, but it will work more effectively if you go bass>EQ pedal>amp.

If there is some important reason why the EQ must be in the fx loop, look at rack mounted equalisers, which are designed to work at line level.

for example: http://www.dv247.com/invt/42522/prod...1181_a_7c42522

this is a relatively high quality one, I'm sure if you did a little digging, you could come up with one for less money.

hope all that helps!

Thanks, Jim -- hmmm - well, I was looking to EQ the amp, not the bass... well, I'll give a go and see if I it works, and if not, perhaps I won't bother at all -- as you can tell by my OP, this is already pushing me to the edge of my technical tolerance!

Well, if you need to tweak the EQ in "your sound" (as in, your amp AND bass) it doesn't matter where they are tweaked...if you want to boost or cut mids, you can do it before or after your amp, and it will sound pretty much the same in either position.

The only time that moving your EQ has a big sonic difference is if you're running a lot of effects.

+1, there's no practical reason in your case why having the EQ before or after the amp would make a difference.

FYI ran the EQ in the effects loop and it sounded fine, worked as it should, and added no noise at all.

An effective application IMO.
