There are so many of them out there, though. You have to give us something to work with here. What is your budget? What functions or tones are you trying to achieve? Live, studio, bedroom/garage, or all of the above? What bass(es) and amp(s) are you using now? Have you tried any preamp/EQ pedals yet, and if so which ones, and what did you like or not like about them?

I already asked this one, but you really have to answer it if you want any help at all: What functions or tones are you trying to achieve?

Check out the Nathan East NE 1 Parametric EQ. That's a good one. But aside from that, the bass specific EQ pedals on the market are so so. There are some guitar EQ pedals. But you have to consider whether those allow you to zero in on frequencies that are important for bass.

I guess my budget is 200. I am trying to achieve a tone like Stefan Lessard for DMB, or like a 70's funk/Motown sound. I want to get one to get the slap sound better. This will not be for live, just practice at this moment.

I am playing a Fender Squier Modified Jazz Bass. I have a small little Acoustic 20 watt amp.

I have not tried any pedals yet.

Wow! You're tonal references are all over the map!

It sounds like you're probably just starting out on bass? An eq pedal is probably not the first thing you need! You're going to get better at finding sounds as you progress as a player, and probably with a more powerful/flexible amp. Imo.

Yep. I agree with scotch, a pedal is not going to help that amp much, but getting a bigger amp will help your tones a lot. That said, search on the words "bddi" and "sansamp" here, because there are tons of threads about those pedals that may help you decide whether to try one of them out.

search is your friend and this is one of the most common threads, but I can't just say that and not respond without being a hypocrite.

Sansamp - Pretty standard preamp, eq, di, tube etc
behringer bdi21 - sansamp clone, not quite as good, but only $30
Hartke VXL - DI,EQ, tube emulation, tone boost, pretty clean tone shaper
MXR M-80 - EQ, DI, distortion, really good if u want distortion
Aguilar tone hammer - high quality tone shaping

Again, guys- the op is playing through the most rudimentary of practice amps. His little 20w combo isn't going to be able to reflect the potential tonal benefits offered by most of the di/preamp pedals being offered. I really think he's going to benefit more by using that $$ towards an amp upgrade!

Huge +1- save your money, and buy a better amp before you even consider adding pedals, especially those like you're considering. A huge waste of money. For the $200, you'd be much better off saving up that money, (and more), and get yourself a proper amp.

except for recording, if u plan on recording and not playing out for a while, a di is all you need.
