EQ Stompbox?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, I'm interested in getting an equalizer pedal for my board. I'm looking for something with a lot of tone shaping ability; I don't know much about EQ pedals, but I do like the look of the Boss GEB-7 because of the 7-band EQ it offers. I've got about $150 to spend, and as of right now I'm leaning towards the Boss. Any other recommendations/reasons not to go with the Boss?

Thanks,

Copious

There's no reasons why you shouldn't go to the Boss but there are other options within your price range. Do you definitely want a graphic EQ?

I'm not a fan of graphic eq's, but I likes me some eq in my signal path. For $125, you could own the Barber Linden, which is a very simple, 3 knobs and 2 switches, and adds lots of sweet warm bottom to my signal.

I use the Boss GE-7 as a kind of shaper behind my OC-2 and then feed it into either a MoogerFooger LPF-101, or a EHX Q-Tron.

The Boss GEB-7 is a great pedal, much better than expected. I use it to get something totally different for a few tunes, and it does that very well. I prefer graphic EQs because that's what I'm most familiar with, but Boss has a semi-parametric EQ pedal as well I believe.

Another great EQ is the Yamaha NE-1 (aka Nathan East "magic box").

don't get stuck in the 'stompbox' mindset. What kind of amp do you use? Would it be feasible to add a 1U 31-band eq? In my guitar rig... I had a Marshall Halfstack. Hidden in the back of the head I kept an old DOD dual 15 band I picked up for $10 at a garage sale. I got constant compliments, even from soundguys, on the tone coming out of a marshall valvestate (as opposed to nicer amps). Get all the fancy pedals and effects you want, but a real tone junky should know tone is just a result of eq. (harmonic series, transients, etc...it's nature)

I have a B2R Rack head, with a 9-band built in, but also use a 31 band in my rack sometimes.

If 3 bands are good, and 7 are better, then logically 31 is the best. Of course, anything semi or full parametric would be sweet.

This seems kind of contradictory ^. First you say that 31 bands is 'best' then suggest parametric EQ.

you're right, I meant if going with graphic, 31 is best. As far as full parametric vs a 31 band graphic... pros and cons to each, dips into the realm of opinion.

Now we're in agreement . I personally prefer parametric EQ, much more tweakable. I can see why a graphic would be preferred for live use though, it's really...well...graphic .

Li'l higher than the OP's price range (if purchased new), but the Carl Martin Parametric Pre/DI is a nice li'l tone shaping tool that breathes alotta life into some pedals that need it... and it comes w/a NICE DI too. One of these days I'll crack mine open and look into modding it for an adjustable Q as well, just cuz I'm a control freak like that.

I've had really good success with the MXR 10 band eq pedal. Mind you I recently got rid of it and replaced it with the Tech 21 VT but it served me well for a few years.

Graphic EQs are excellent tools and it's hard to beat the GEB7 for size, sound and durability. but the MXR 10 bands are pretty nifty.
