EQ suggestion, or just general rig knowledge wanted!

Got the bass, amp and cab. Custom made bass, old Sunn head and Celestion 15s. Now i want a little more control over the sound.

I'm assuming an EQ is my next step unless you can tell me otherwise. I'm looking for a very rich bass sound. A happy medium between jazz and rock i guess. Do not like very trebly bass (string noise and what not), i just want a very rich, smooth sound that will work with rock/blues as well as quiet, jazzy piano and bass parts.

Let me know what you think my next purchase should be.

*Leaning more towards analog gear, but not necessarily limited to it.

Thanks in advance. -Mike Sandman

Yeah the amp you've got should be able to deal out the rich smooth bass in spades- and if it can't, a pedal won't make it do so. Flats are a good suggestion. If it's really "control" that you want, then yes an EQ is a good option. Check out the semi-parametrics by Carl Martin and TC Electronic, and the new fully parametric one from Empress.

flats, as in flat wound strings? yes i like using those.

I looked into those EQs you suggested and the Empress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmgDhyfIe70) really stood out. I might be sold on it. my buddy has the fuzz god and it's pretty impressive too.

keep it coming though. just trying to get an idea of where to start looking. so much gear to want...

swap out the tone cap in your bass.

i put a .1 uf in my jazz bass, and now i can roll off ALL the high end... i hate treble on my clean bass sound.

sounds like ur bass need flatwound strings.

Flats give you that fat warm low end sound so you can dial in some mid to make your bass cut in nicely on the mix. I get plenty of low end and growl on my flatwound jazz bass.

if anybody has an EQ, or any effects for that matter i'd love to hear about them. like i said, so far that Empress seems like a winner.

i'm guessing your custom bass has active electronics? a passive tone knob with a low cutoff is really a wonderful thing. i have a passive tone circuit AFTER the pre in my fodera, and it is great... if you already have flats and don't have a round enough tone, i feel like you need to get that rounder sound happening at the source.
