What do you guys feel are the essential pedals/effects for a bassist to have? i have distortion (MXR M-80 bass DI plus) that i love, but i want to look into some other pedals that i could use with the mxr to shape my tone a bit more.
I play through an Ampeg B2RE head which has a 9 band EQ so I dont really need any sort of equalizer pedals but if anyone could give advice on the purpose of compression pedals/envelope filters/flangers/phasers/chorus/volume pedals/reverb etc... and which ones you've tried out before that are more essential to get first, that would be great!

But I like envelope filter and a good octave run in parallel and blended. It would kill me to give that up right now. |

If we're talking full-on desert island pedalboard I'd probably trim it to four filters. |

Pedal order is HOG effect >mixer. Hog dry >Micro Q-tron HP mode >EHX Small Stone > DOD Classic Tube distortion (really light dist.) > mixer.
I recorded this to show the versatility of the HOG (and because I was stranded in a hotel room 300 miles from my family).

Besides that it's all a matter of your rig and personal taste. |

| | | | i think every one of mine is essential. and ive got 11 right now
as usual, its all about you, and your situation. some people here have said none are essential. do you think bootsy would be a happy afronaut funkateering about the likes of funky freedom without his mutron? i dont really think so.

Sure, he's famous for his effects sounds, and the world of bass effects will forever honor his name. But I feel confident he could have happily thrown down the massive funky jams even if he had never discovered filters. |

I don't hear a lot of usuable bass sounds with all these effects and do-dads (a delay? really?) Sure, it's fun to fool around with them, or if you're in some sort of experimental noise band... But I just don't get the idea of making a bass sound like something other than a bass- like a piano, or a helicopter. I mean, in that case, just get a piano. or a helicopter.
Take that list in another thread of the 100 most recognizable basslines (and the other 100 that should've made the list) - how many of those tunes had anything other than a well EQ'ed, (possibly) compressed, pure bass tone?
Like zero?
ANYWAY... Mini-rant over.
To answer the OP's question: you may want to look into a compressor as your next effect, if you're looking to level out your dynamics and add some punch.

Edit: I do like pedals, have quite a few & want more, but for live use I like it quick & easy. My Zoom has a tuner, mute/volume pedal & everything else I'll likely want/need on a gig.

That being said...
1. the EBS Bass-IQ is the pedal I use the most. Mainly on pop/top-40 gigs where I play some disco.
2. the Boss OC-2 is another one I use a lot for that 80's synth sound
3. the Fulltone Bass-Drive is the third I could not sell. I use it on rock gigs where I want some edge to my sound.
I have many other pedals but I would not cry if I'd have to live without them.
Finally, while I tried a few compressors I feel I don't need it. Don't know if it has something to do with all the years of technique I did... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
