essential bass pedals

What do you guys feel are the essential pedals/effects for a bassist to have? i have distortion (MXR M-80 bass DI plus) that i love, but i want to look into some other pedals that i could use with the mxr to shape my tone a bit more.

I play through an Ampeg B2RE head which has a 9 band EQ so I dont really need any sort of equalizer pedals but if anyone could give advice on the purpose of compression pedals/envelope filters/flangers/phasers/chorus/volume pedals/reverb etc... and which ones you've tried out before that are more essential to get first, that would be great!

i think an eq is essential, you said you have a nine-band but its nice to be able to change your tone a bit for certain parts of songs you know maybe like a bassier bridge or more trebly chourus. besides that i think a delay is the most fun to play around with. its not very practical in most band situations that ive been in but its fun as hell.

The ones you like the sound of.

But I like envelope filter and a good octave run in parallel and blended. It would kill me to give that up right now.

None are essential. Most are fun. Some are useful. It's up to your tastes and desires.

That sounds really interesting. Got sound clips?

Couple of decent octavers, half a dozen filters, two fuzzes, I could probably get away with that.

If we're talking full-on desert island pedalboard I'd probably trim it to four filters.

Here you go. The part you're looking for is at about the 15 second mark. The sound following is the filter by itself. If I were to do it again I would probably bring the filtered tone up a little bit.

Pedal order is HOG effect >mixer. Hog dry >Micro Q-tron HP mode >EHX Small Stone > DOD Classic Tube distortion (really light dist.) > mixer.

I recorded this to show the versatility of the HOG (and because I was stranded in a hotel room 300 miles from my family).

If I had it to do over, I could've bought 2 more Rics for the cost of my pedal board. But, it is what it is, and I couldn't imagine not having that board full of blinky boxes.

An Amp Sim + DI is the most important and practically useful pedal to me. After that a tuner, then an EQ if you don't have one somewhere.

Besides that it's all a matter of your rig and personal taste.

Compressor, octave, OD, fuzz, flanger. I could live with that. Might have to add a wah too. Wait ... those are exactly what I have.

i think every one of mine is essential. and ive got 11 right now

as usual, its all about you, and your situation. some people here have said none are essential. do you think bootsy would be a happy afronaut funkateering about the likes of funky freedom without his mutron? i dont really think so.

I think he did a kickass job in the JB's, with no effects other than his funky self. Sure, he's famous for his effects sounds, and the world of bass effects will forever honor his name. But I feel confident he could have happily thrown down the massive funky jams even if he had never discovered filters.

An OD, maybe a fuzz, a good compressor. Personally, that's all I need, at least for the type of music I play/listen to. I don't hear a lot of usuable bass sounds with all these effects and do-dads (a delay? really?) Sure, it's fun to fool around with them, or if you're in some sort of experimental noise band... But I just don't get the idea of making a bass sound like something other than a bass- like a piano, or a helicopter. I mean, in that case, just get a piano. or a helicopter.

Take that list in another thread of the 100 most recognizable basslines (and the other 100 that should've made the list) - how many of those tunes had anything other than a well EQ'ed, (possibly) compressed, pure bass tone?

Like zero?

ANYWAY... Mini-rant over.

To answer the OP's question: you may want to look into a compressor as your next effect, if you're looking to level out your dynamics and add some punch.

A compressor, though I haven't used mine for months. I think the patch I nearly always use on my B2.1u has some compression dialed in.

Edit: I do like pedals, have quite a few & want more, but for live use I like it quick & easy. My Zoom has a tuner, mute/volume pedal & everything else I'll likely want/need on a gig.

Justin Chancelor runs a constant distortion. . .

Would he be in a list of 100 most recognizeable(other than by bassplayers, I assume)basslines? What's more, the best distortions I've heard came out of a hot tube amp(sort of a volume boost effect, I guess ).

While not an effect, I feel an good DI (Radial JDI) is something your should get before buying any pedal if you're serious about your art.

That being said...

1. the EBS Bass-IQ is the pedal I use the most. Mainly on pop/top-40 gigs where I play some disco.
2. the Boss OC-2 is another one I use a lot for that 80's synth sound
3. the Fulltone Bass-Drive is the third I could not sell. I use it on rock gigs where I want some edge to my sound.

I have many other pedals but I would not cry if I'd have to live without them.

Finally, while I tried a few compressors I feel I don't need it. Don't know if it has something to do with all the years of technique I did...
