To my knowledge Dirnt doesn't use any effects. His tone comes from his rig (signature P-Bass & Mesa boogie amps) with it eq'd for a mid/trebly growl and played with a pick.

Flea's tone has changed quite a bit over the years though he's used GK amps as long as I can remember. His basses have changed though, from a Music Man to a Wal to an Alembic to his Modulus signature and most recently a vintage Jazz bass.

He's sparingly used effects, mostly filters (on record he's used: DOD FX25, MuTron with a dying battery, MXR Auto Q and a Dunlop 105Q wah and he has a Q-Tron for live work) but he's also got a Boss ODB-3 for his live distortion tone, which quite honestly didn't sound good either time I saw RHCP. He also gets some overdrive from his amp (a GK 2001RB-II), notably on "By the Way".

But none of those effects will get you close to Flea's tone. His rig and technique (he's got low action and a very heavy touch) are infinitely more important.

flea and dirnt usually show up on the forum so they'll answer your question in probably a few hours.

i think Dirnt still uses zinky pedals but other than that it's a pick, a fender head and an 810 and a p bass - no real magic there.

the dirnt basses have a specially voiced pickup that nails the 2k heavy Dirnt punk pick tone, which he is purported to like very very much.

Also an Eclair Evil Twin DI if you want his recorded tone and an old Ampeg SVT head.

Im pretty sure in an interview he did talking about that album... he said he used an overdriven marshall head.

I think you're confusing "By The Way" with "Around the World". That was the track where a cranked Marshall was blended with his clean tone. For By The Way I've tried a Diesel Dawg (basically the distortion circuit of the 2001RB-II) through my 1001RB-II and it nails that tone.
