I've never been too into bass effects but i'd like to go out and try something new, so what fx's can you recommend me....anything from synths to distortions to delays, I play a warwick thumb 5 string, into a LMII, into the berg ht mini stack, if that matters.
thanks a lot. |

We get loads of threads like this - if you are more specific about the kinds of sounds you want then it is easier to help you - if you don't know what you want then maybe you don't need any effects?

If you want to change your bass's voice considerably, then what is "essential" is to find out which effects will produce the voicing you hope to achieve. |

That'd be tough to list those and what they do What's essential to me (an EBow, guitar-like distortion, etc.) will be COMPLETELY different than the essentials of another type of player/music that needs a compressor and a mild overdrive for their essentials.
You're not catching negativity- you're just seeing the reaction that you'd get if you walked into a grocery store and just asked someone "what should I eat?" |

On topic, my all-time essential effect is an amplifier. I use it to add volume & start arguments. I like it because it's loud.
OK, dead serious now.
I often use compression; I like it because it cleans up my sloppy slap technique.
Chorus can make the bass seem 'bigger' but too much takes me to mudville.
Envelope filters make people say, 'Oh- that's funk!'
Distortion/overdrive makes people tell me to turn down.

From the Effects FAQ, here's a link to a Harmony Central article explaining what a few different effects are and what they do.
I do think that is one area where the FAQ could be improved. Not only is the Harmony Central article a bit technical for beginners, but it lacks a number of major effects types. A short description of each effect type, maybe with a link to a sample from the Effects section of the Wiki might go a long way toward having a place to point people with no experience who want to dip their toe in the ocean of effects. |

I'm sure it seems like people are being rude, but you have to understand how vague your requests are. Give us some background on what kind of music you play, where you see effects fitting in with your sound and maybe even recorded effects use that you dig and this forum will be a lot more helpful. |
