Examples of how you use your fx

Sign in to disble this ad
Not really another "what pedal should I buy", but there are a lot of fx pedals and I don't really know what kind of sounds they give.

Can you give some examples of cover songs you play and the corresponding fx you use?

Thanks!

Well, if we're just talking about covers, I've been known to play Breed by Nirvana over and over (and over and over and over) again with pretty much every dirt box I've ever used.

If you're simply wondering what sounds like what, check the sound sample page found somewhere within the Wiki link up top. This thingy:

Yeah, actually looking for more real world examples, not just sound bytes. Easier to understand when you can hear it in the context of a song...

Thanks!

Well, I'll go through mt pedalboard

Tuner - To keep in tune (obviously)
Ahdown Hyperdrive - To get quite a gritty/dirty bass tone, mixed well with the band as well as sounds nice alone (also works as a great pedalboard light)
Blackstar HT-DistX - A very warm sounding high gain dirt with lots of lows, I use this allot for the songs with only one guitar, does the job very well & keeps my feet warm
DOD Classic Fuzz - A nice big muff clone, this one's used for intros to songs mostly, or fill type parts, think similar to Shinedown's "Heroes"
Chorus - This one gets used for the slower more ballady numbers in the set (although they don't get played that often, because who comes to a rock show for ballads)
Phaser - Again, like the Fuzz, this one gets used allot for intro, or when I'm playing something under when our singer is talking between songs (it makes a wooshy noise that sounds cool)
Boss NS-2 - Noise gate, keep the distortion & fuzz feedback in check.

More like this:

I use my <insert pedal name here> on <insert song name here> by <insert band name here>

Now when I, or others, listen to that song, we can understand how one might go about getting that sound.

The vast majority of my effects usage is not for playing covers. But when I have used effects in the past for cover bands I simply use the same effect (preferably the exact same pedal) as was used on the original.

If you want a list of popular songs with effects usage on the bass and how I would approximate them I certainly could do that.

At the moment my only gig that I would consider a "cover" band is a RHCP tribute act that is kind of sputtering out at the moment. But in that case I can tell you the songs and what I use:

Power of Equality (DOD FX25 during the break)
Around the World (ProCo Turbo Rat in the opening and break)
By The Way (Pork Loin or dialed back ProCo Turbo Rat throughout)

And for the following songs I used either a Qtron+, Maxon AF-9 Robotalk or Pigtronix EP-1 on the demo versions but now use a Chunk 00Funk live:

Sir Psycho Sexy
21st Century
Coffee Shop

I bought a Groove Regulator to A/B with the Chunk for gigs but I've only played out with it once and we had virtually no stage monitors so I couldn't really tell how it went.

Anyway, that's my effects usage for cover songs. All my other effects usage is for originals or jam sessions.

An old band of mine used to cover Behind the Wheel by Depeche Mode and I used a Moog MF-101 and Tech 21 XXL bass, but that has little to nothing in common with the original.

I have a limiter/enhancer that stays on all the time. It puts just enough squeeze and umph on my tone, not huge, but nice. I could do without it just fine, but why?

I have a bass flanger that I use for one song ("Sweet Emotion").

I have a distortion/OD pedal that I use for bass parts that were recorded that way (i.e. Mel Schacher of Grand Funk)

The end. I keep it to a minimum, and that way when I do use an effect, it really pops out at you.

I am not discriminating against original bands. However, by mentioning cover songs, more people may be able to understand the sound without having to go listen to it...

Thus illustrating a great part about playing your own original music: You can use any effect you want, whenever you want.

As long as it's, y'know.. tasteful.

"Got This Thing On the Move" by Grand Funk Railroad I used to use a Holy Stain fuzz but now I just crank the gain on my English Muff'n. It never really recreated the tone, but I liked the way it felt when we played it.

The only other cover that I abused effects on was Blue Jeans Blues by ZZTop. I put a Hall reverb on it so that when I slap-muted my strings I got something similar to the snare reverb from the original recording.

My favorite use is:

Whammy for Whale Song sounds or, add some distortion for dirty elephant screams... its awesome. There is more to both of them then just whammying (that needs to be a word), if someone wants me to explain pm me.
