anyone know any good examples where a ring modulator is used on bass? im not looking for a demo of a pedal, but an instance where it is used in a proper band setting.
im quite interested in buying one, but i cant seem to find any good examples of it being used effectively with a band.
ring mods im looking at are the dod gonkulator (hard to find), ehx frequency analyzer and (allthough this is quite a budget pusher) the ehx ring thing. living in Australia sucks, Americans get everything cheaper Its cheaper for me to buy from America with postage than to buy in the motherland
i just dont really want to make the big investment if i wont actually find a proper use for it. |

The auto-tuning function is great, and it does lots of stuff that normal ring mods won't do, like pitch shifting, chorus, tremolo, wave shapes, etc, and it has presets.
I recorded a quick demo of the sounds that I get out of mine the other day. I'll post it if you're interested. |

I just go through some of the presets and some extra.
Don't mind the sloppy playing BTW, I was pretty hung-over from the night before.

I do know that he used the Moog live a couple times when I saw him for big swoops and low frequency rumblings.
Ring Modulator is not the easiest effect to use in a band context. My use for it is generally split between tremolo and electronica tones. I like it in front of a low pass filter with expression control of cutoff.
But you aren't going to find all that many examples of ring mod on guitar in songs, let alone bass. That said, I'm not sure people would have said the exact same thing about the Whammy (and Bass Whammy) before Tom Morello really opened up its possibilities and Justin Chancellor made novel use of it. |
