Examples of ring modulators on bass in songs

Sign in to disble this ad
anyone know any good examples where a ring modulator is used on bass? im not looking for a demo of a pedal, but an instance where it is used in a proper band setting.

im quite interested in buying one, but i cant seem to find any good examples of it being used effectively with a band.

ring mods im looking at are the dod gonkulator (hard to find), ehx frequency analyzer and (allthough this is quite a budget pusher) the ehx ring thing. living in Australia sucks, Americans get everything cheaper Its cheaper for me to buy from America with postage than to buy in the motherland

i just dont really want to make the big investment if i wont actually find a proper use for it.

I don't have an example of a ring mod in a song, but out of those, I can attest to the awesomeness of the Ring Thing. The auto-tuning function is great, and it does lots of stuff that normal ring mods won't do, like pitch shifting, chorus, tremolo, wave shapes, etc, and it has presets.

I recorded a quick demo of the sounds that I get out of mine the other day. I'll post it if you're interested.

Here is my video with the Ring Thing:

I just go through some of the presets and some extra.
Don't mind the sloppy playing BTW, I was pretty hung-over from the night before.

It's all over the Squarepusher record "Ultravisitor" (and his other ones, to a lesser degree). I guess it's debatable whether his work counts as a proper band setting.

True enough, I think it was more the "proper" bit that I guess is debatable. I'm a big fan of his, but I can imagine that that record might not be what a lot of people mean when they talk about using effects in real songs.

Juan Alderete has had up to three ring mods on his board (Maestro and two Moogs) for The Mars Volta but I couldn't tell you any recorded songs on which they appear. I do know that he used the Moog live a couple times when I saw him for big swoops and low frequency rumblings.

Ring Modulator is not the easiest effect to use in a band context. My use for it is generally split between tremolo and electronica tones. I like it in front of a low pass filter with expression control of cutoff.

But you aren't going to find all that many examples of ring mod on guitar in songs, let alone bass. That said, I'm not sure people would have said the exact same thing about the Whammy (and Bass Whammy) before Tom Morello really opened up its possibilities and Justin Chancellor made novel use of it.

yeh, im a volta fan, but i never really noticed the ring mods going at any point in their albums. i allready have a whammy IV, it gives me those digital rings and buzzes but has no clean blend built in. i could always use the dry out, but that will take up more board space with another mixer pedal.

I think that's the synth tbh...

Trevor isn't really into pedals. Played this song on an Ashbory if I'm correct.

I didn't pick up on a lot of bass freq in that clip. Sounded cool though.
