Excuse me being a noob but i need help!

Sign in to disble this ad
so I'm a huge fan of the bass tone kings of leon has and just recently bought two pedals.... a EHX big muff and a sansamp bass driver

I know jared the bassist of KOL uses a big muff on both this song:

"crawl"
YouTube - ‪kings of leon - crawl‬‏

and

mcfearless
YouTube - ‪Kings of Leon - McFearless‬‏

what should i set the knobs for on my big muff to put it at this tone settings?

also here are some of examples of his general tone you can youtube search there name and find plenty more reference... It would really really help me out if you guys could tell me where to set my knobs on my sans amp to best get this out:

YouTube - ‪Kings Of Leon - My Party‬‏

YouTube - ‪Kings of Leon - Pickup Truck lyrics‬‏

YouTube - ‪Sex on Fire - Kings of Leon Lyrics‬‏

thank you so much all!

No easy way to answer that. Sounds like he's got the tone rolled back a bit. Also, depending on the Muff you got depends on the tone. Not all Big Muffs are the same. Just use your ears.

Roll the tone back a little on your bass and your muff.
Get as close as you can with the Muff first since you've only got to deal with dialing in two knobs, fuzz and tone.
After you've got the Muff dialed in close keep the knobs like that and tweak the sansamp to get the tone.

Unfortunately I don't have either of those pedals so I can't test for you and try to get the tone. Dialing in the perfect tone to your ears can seem intimidating at first but you need to practice.

If you truly can't get the tone after lots of tweaking then you may need to change something in your setup, maybe a different muff variant.

The sansamp stuff sounds like it's hitting the drive pretty hard. May Party sounds like a pick with the presence knob up to maybe 12 o'clock or so.

I have a green Russian Muff so anything I say here won't help you much.

Honestly, it's my opinion that you should just experiment and see what you come up with on your own. You'll learn your bass, amp, and effects much much more that way. Plus you'll probably stumble on some cool sounds of your own.

Good luck man. It's so hard to say what YOUR bass with YOUR hands and YOUR amp will sound like vs. the guy from Kings of Leon's bass, hands, and amp. See what I mean? There are so many factors that go into getting tone that to say "set your knobs like this" doesn't really work.

Good luck and have fun!
