extremely confused

so this is most likely going to be a long post... sorry
okay so i want to get a rack limiter/compressor because i have my lmb3 always on and i want to make space for a delay pedal. i also want to get a noise gate because ANY excess noise will set off my fix'd fuzz when i use it. i like how the boss noise supressor works but i would like one in a rackmount form. i dont know if there is a single space rackmount unit that does both limiting and noise gating well but im hoping there is one. ive read a lot of bongo's reviews and all but im still confused..
another thing that is adding to the confusion is how i will connect it all. i tried reading faqs about line level and what nit but i dont completely comprehend how im going to send m instruments signal and all .... im soooo confused. i know its been explained to an extend because ive searched but i dont even get these explanations.. so if anyone can help me with any of this that would be amazing.

and if this is in the wrong fourm sorry..

It's cool, this stuff is a bit hard to wrap your head around at first.

Lots of rack units contain both limiting and gating functions. To see what I mean, just go to the "live sound" or "pro audio" section of any big web store like MF or Sweetwater, and click on the links for signal processors and then compressors. Look at the 1-rack-height units with more than 4 knobs.

You connect them by wiring the preamp output (or line out, or effects loop send) of your amp to the input of the comp; then wiring the output of the comp to the power amp input (or fx loop return) of the amp. Your bass plugs into the regular input on the front if your amp.

Another option is a "channel strip" which contains a preamp, some EQ, and comp/limit and gate functions (depending on the specific unit--they don't all have the same features). These can be used as described above, or you can plug your bass straight into the preamp, to bypass your amp's preamp stage.
