The Fattest "Growl" Tone Ever!

Sign in to disble this ad
This is the greatest sound I have ever heard come out of a bass cabinet. Don't suppose any of you can guess his recipe? C'mon Walbassplayer, you are the man in this category, I'm stumped...

The first 20 seconds is what I'm talkin' about (though the whole song rules).

BTW: It's Andrew Weiss on bass...

Also, any guess on the bass - it's not a Fender.

The End of Silence is such an incredible freakin' album.

Andrew Weiss and Melvin Gibbs have some of my favourite bass tones EVAR.

I'm no help other than that.

Sounds like Bass distortion to me. I'd replace my speakers if my sweet sounding rig sounded like that. Really.

:-)

I understand a lot of guys dig it... but meh... to each their own.

Growl's true meaning continues to be debated broadly amongst different styles tastes of bass players.

I could've sworn Weiss used a Rat...but don't quote me on that.

you could use a bass with a Sidewinder pickup in combination with a Big Muff, or another distortion with a high tone capability.

I think that's a Yamaha BB-series bass of some sort

just wanted to mention the bp article wasn't a full blown article, more of a single page kind of thing, if i recall. around '91 or so...sim cain, andrew weiss, chris haskett- incredible, jaw dropping band. there's a live release(i think from amsterdam) with a really kickin' bass solo, well worth a bit of looking around for...

According to this: http://www.creativegtrstudio.com/library_catalog.html, he is (at least) in the March of '93 issue, some special edition. I'm going to order it...

The rig in the back there is a GK 800RB (a punk classic! ) with a pair of aluminum-cone Hartke 4x10 cabs. I wonder if that sort of sound comes from pushing that rig to its limits with the Boost circuit? I've never really spent enough time with an 800RB (or any time at all with aluminum-cone Hartkes) to know for sure.

EDIT: Nevermind, there's a pedalboard back there, on the floor below his rig! Can anyone ID what's on there? Looks like a Boss tuner, something red, and a few other things...

I still can't figure out the bass, though. It looks like it could be a Yamaha BB, like mentioned by lurker, but it still seems off, especially because of that pickguard-ish thing around the knobs, that extends to the P-pickup.

Maybe it's a Yamaha bass I'm unfamiliar with. But that headstock does look like a Yamaha.

sounds like my muffbender played with a bass with bright steel rounds and through a bright cabinet.
