Signal incoming to the sidechain loop will just affect the activity of your comp... So when you want to modify or change the affecting signal, you use the sidechain... Feed the sidechain with your bass signal, to modify it with built-in eq (for example, to even different frequencies levels for more effective compression of original signal) or other effects inserted in the loop, or feed it with some drums for cool rhythmic action... Just for example... This is the vast field for experiments...
