Feel like my tone is lacking

I have a fender 250 bass head and a 4x10 bass man cabinet. I like effects but I also want something with possibly a tuner,and forsure a noise gate. I was thinking about the pod but wondering if it would be good for recording? Are there any other good rack mounted effects units?

If you're trying to fix your tone, then start with your bass, amp or cab. If you're trying to create tones, then now is the time to start delving into effects. Your question is vague and hard to answer specifically so I'm going with my default newbie effects answer.
