I'd probably try a Big Muff into some EQ to try to get close.

Oddly the EHX Nano Muff nails that which is the reason in all my top end gear I still have this £20 pedal knocking around.

I am not an effects user and I don't think any were used to get that sound..... but if I could push a button to get a sound, THAT would be the one....Felix and Leslie were the tone monsters of their day.

When I was first posting I thought, "Why would anyone even try to get that sound?" Heh. Differnt strokes for different folks.

big muff, 12 oclock on all knobs, tone knob rolled back a bit on the bass... should get close. I play with a 'fuzzy' tone like this frequently. I take it those sunn amps are either for guitar or have some sort of overdrive in them?

wow. different strokes, indeed. that tone's amazing. reminds me a bit of some very old live Cliff Burton clips; must be that old Gibson p/u he dropped in his Rick.

i can only imagine how LOUD it must've been in that room.

Actually, I don't think they were instrument specific all that much. And yes, they do have some overdrive built in...they're called power tubes. HELL TOO THA YAY-ESSSS!

I think a Muff would do it. Long Red is still one of the songs that pops to mind when I think "bass distortion."

You know, I don't think I ever heard tube amp distortion ever sound like a Big Muff before. Kind of blew my mind, to be honest. I've gotta drag out the old B-15 to see if I can do that, too.

Any pedal like the Chandler Tube Driver to overdrive the amp's front end for distortion?

And then he showed Jack Bruce how to do it too ;-)

If you want that sound sometimes but not all the time, I'm guessing you could make a little box with the right diode and a switch for about $4...

I just got his tone right now with a Big Muff and a Hofner Violin bass with HEAVY strings (.50-.110's)
Be sure to use a neck pickup with tone rolled off.
