So what's the cheapest/least PITA way to get a half decent fifth up?

Fret it?

Pedal-wise, a Boss PS-5 should do the trick.

You get what you pay for...
If you get a cheap pedal that does a 5th up, it might sound glitchy or not spot-on.
Spend a little more to get a little more...or just use you ring finger.

People, I'm sure he wouldn't be asking the question if it were not for an application in which fingering the fifth was not feasible.

EDIT: TRIPLE NEGATIVE FTW

OP, there are a few pedals than can do this. The Boss PS-3 and PS-5 can both do it, although both have been said to sound a bit glitchy/chirpy/fake. The whammy has a harmony mode that can do a fifth, but it will include your dry note as well. On the other end of the spectrum, the HOG and Pitchfactor can do this and track flawlessly, but they would be insane overkill if you just need this one function.

Thanks so far! Yes, I often do the chord thing on a sustained note but lookin' at a metal trio project where I might want to just switch it on while the guitarist goes off on a solo. As it is just metal it don't have to sound perfect.

I was hopin' to find something under $100.

Again, Boss PS-5 will do the trick.

I can't think of any cheaper way to do this.

I'm also thinkin' of trying a octave below pedal with a sharp HPF at 60hz to just get the third harmonic of that which would be the fifth of the original note. I have an old crossover I could use for the HPF...

Akai Unibass
Gives you a fifth above, or a fourth below, plus an optional octave above.
Separate outputs so you can send your shifted pitch through effects, guitar amp sims, guitar amps, etc...

It was made for your purpose.

Too bad they don't make them anymore. Suppose I could find someone willing to trade for my original Mutron or Dredgetone Bass Angler ?

You have it backwards...

The Unibass offers an octave above, with optional 5th up or 4th below the octave up. It also has optional distortion, and a seperate out for the Octave and Dry signal.

Don't see the Unibass for sale too often... I always wondered why they stopped making them.

I'd suspect it's the old issue that guitar pedals outsell bass pedals by at least 10x - they just weren't selling enough (making enough money) to bother with it .

The cheap Behringer copy of the Boss shifter is maybe better sounding than the Boss, it's certainly fine for metal
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/US600.aspx
Use it in a loop because the bypass is poor.

Thanks, it's cheap enough to mess around with for sure .

EDIT> Yah, that does a great job! The "harmonist" mode doesn't track lower notes well enough to use but all the other modes sound fine. Might even get another so's I can use the "detune" mode at the same time as the "pitch shift" mode or just be able to switch between them without having to turn the knobs. I took the heavy spring out so's I can easily switch it by hand on top of my amp - don't think I'd want to actually be stomping on this little plastic box .
