Well, if it has to be either a Fulltone Bass-Drive or a Boss ODB-3 I'd definitely say the Bass-Drive is worth the extra money, I've owned several Bass-Drives and ODB-3's. But there's a whole world of overdrives out there so I wonder exactly how you narrowed it down to those two specifically... search around and read up on different units so you can make a more educated decision to what is really the right unit for you.

+1
I have owned an ODB-3 in the past. It was an okay pedal when I started out. But I soon realized that it wasn't the sound that I was after. Got myself a HBE Hematoma now, and I am loving it. You should definitely do some searches though and find what works for you!

I've never owned the odb-3, but I have heard a few played by other people. I've heard a lot sound bad, but also have seen afew sound good. It seems that to make it sound good people generally put them infront of tube heads, and spend a good amount of time fiddling with it to make it sound great. So I won't say it's a terrible pedal, you probably just need alot of the right situations. I do know that there are more overdrives with great out of the box tones, and that the sound samples in the Talkbass Wiki could be a great resource to hear alot of those. The only other thing I could add is to maybe post a link to a video or a clip of a certain sound you'd like to have to help us help you.

I think ben might overdriving his mesas, but since its only prominent in the chorus, people have said that he uses a bass drive.

Since the Mesa stuff is hybrid (tube preamp, ss power amp), he is pushing the preamp stage into clipping by increasing the gain.

I use the OBD-3 and it's working for me. To my ears it definitely falls more in the distortion than OD category, as it's more aggressive than a standard OD pedal. Also, its adjustment is rather sensitive and you need to tweak each knob in small increments. It's easy to over-shoot on your settings. For that matter, I suspect many effects boxes are that way, but I have limited patience in fiddling with them.
