If you don't already use overdrive as a tonal standard for your playing, it wouldn't be a bad idea to add some.
Of course, what kind of overdrive to recommend is another story... there are a LOT of options out there with different sounds!
If you're into ambient effects, consider some delay and chorus pedals as well.
I'd highly recommend going to a guitar shop and just trying out a few random effects on bass. Despite what people (including the employees) might tell you, all effects
work on bass, but some effects are prone to cutting off some of your low end. Not all effects will do that, though. Bass-specific effects tend to keep that in mind for their designs, but they're not the only pedals that rock on bass - plenty of others exist without such problems.
