What's your price?

I have bought a Digitech BP90, $100, and has over 45 effects. It's my first pedal, and it has distortion, chorus, phaser, and much more. I don't know about funk, but it is a great pedal.

A tuner

As for filters, look at the (used) MXR Bass Envelope Filter or the 3 Leaf Audio Groove Regulator/GR, GR2, or Proton.

Entirely depends on your amp and setup but... I'd go with the VST bass pedal. It is a sweet overdrive/distortion pedal that will do the AMPEG thing or get really dirty if you crank it. It basically does a few things really well and will give you options down the road. After that the sky is the limit, oh compression/limiter would be next on the list,

I agree with this dude.. MXR bass envelope filter is a great pedal! I just sold mine to a friend so I can get a source audio BEF. But the MXR has a great funky sound

Stop, step away slowly, turn and run, don't look back. Effects are like crack: don't get started and you won't have to quit.

The funk is in your fingers.

I just sold every one of the boxes I had laying around doing nothing. Raised enough dough for nice new amp. If I'd never bought any of those stupid boxes, I'd have had enough dough for two new amps.

I'm still a sucker for loopers.

+1

Though I use a Zoom B1 Multi-efx pedal for One bass, because i need it for a sound unreproducable (a drive-efx accentuating the pick and the high frequencies, very much evil) without it. Gives Me the possibilities of 2 EQ (pedal and amp) that'll make the sound fit any amp (very useful for small gigs Where you don't bring your own amp and/or have Line-boxes with sound-techs you've never met). But with my fretless, it's just plug and play

...plug and play. It's all about how you want it to sound, but you Can get a Good sound out of most amps with enough tweaking. The ones with graphic EQ are my best Friends!!!

I love my MXR bass envelope filter. It's got those classic funk sounds nailed. The SourceAudio has more tricks--reverse sweeps and some neat synthy square waves--but the basic quack of a funky EV...I'd choose the MXR every time.

I also want to add... I'm pretty conservative when it comes to effects. In fact, up until a couple of months ago, I never used any. Maybe it was just that my first experiences with pedals was as a kid when one of us would put a bass through the guitar's distortion (or chorus or delay, etc.) and I didn't care for it at all.

I've realized the error of my ways now, but I'm still pretty skeptical and thoughtful about an effect before I'll put it on the board. Right now I have a tuner, a compressor, an envelope filter and an overdrive. I use the overdrive full-time, but it's barely on. I just use it for a little tone shaping and some sizzle, not anything like actual distortion. And the envelope filter is used sparingly.

So basically I run a compressor and a tiny bit of overdrive. Occasionally an envelope filter. The end.

But I do kind of have my eye on MXRs octaver...

Multi-effects processors are usually the most recommended effects for beginners. a zoom b1 or a digitech bp90 would be great choices for beginning bassists who wants to explore effects.
