So, I want to buy at least one "fun" effect or more than one if possible.. i already have a danelectro pastrami overdrive that i got for a GREAT deal, so thats cool and all. Rogue 4 string P/J passive into Peavey TKO 80 amp. Heres my strange stipulation.. I need to buy the pedal from amazon.com. I have a pretty big gift card to there, and I would like to invest it in pedal(s). So, I hope you guys can help me out, y'all know much more than me about effects!!! |

| | | | I have- I don't know what is a crappy pedal vs. a good pedal, a good deal vs. a crappy deal, etc.
I want suggestions of pedals that are available for purchase on amazon.com |

But here's a thread I've been posting in about first pedals First pedal, No multi, dont answer the OP :X
Skip down to after the op decides to get a single effect instead of a multi-effect and you'll see suggestions.
And, I guess your bass could be fine, sometimes people luck out and get a good bass out of a notorious brand. So, I would suggest trying out other basses and deciding whether you should get a better one or not.

1. 'Pretty big' is really subjective. To some pretty big is $75.00, to others pretty big is $500. Make no mistake, we all can recommend something in either of those price ranges.
2. Fun is also really subjective. If you are playing in something that really requires a clean mellow tone, a Bass Big Muff probably isn't going to suit you. Conversely if you want some in your face tone, then you will probably want to stay away from a reverb.
3. If you are picking up pedals to fix your tone, then you need to fix your bass/amp setup first. If you are looking to add to your tones, then an effect is a good place to look. I like octave pedals. I can recommend octave pedals from 40 to 500 dollars. I have an octave that sells new for 280 and an octave that sells new for 450. They both do much more than the simplest octave pedals do, but you may like octavers that do much less. Or you may not like octavers at all.
Good luck in your search. |

| | | | I personally enjoy the Russian (black housing) Big Buff. It's the cheapest muff, and has a very unique sound. There can be some reliability issues if you plan on gigging it relentlessly, but (and I'm making a snap judgment here) I'm guessing that's not what you're looking for. I just think the sounds the Russian Muff pumps out are fantastic. |

Don't assume a big muff is something "every bassplayer should have". After so much muff hype crammed down my throat on TB I finally caved and bought one and can honestly say it was the most disappointing pedal purchase of my life. Listen to samples, and even then, don't trust what you hear. Go to stores, try out pedals. Just because lots of people here use big muffs does not mean it's right for everyone. There's a bazillion other fuzzes available, so check them out. And more importantly, there's a bazillion other effects that you may find infinitely more fun than fuzz.
/swimming upsteam in a river of big muff lovers.
I love you guys, but ya need to lay off the big muff hype for newbies. Really, you are all awsome. |

| | | | +1 for Russian Muff I love mine. I just picked up a Boss OC-2 (Octave) pedal and I'm really digging that too. Maybe give that a look or another Octaver.

There are A LOT of muff-type distortions which offer better tone and flexibility. But that's and endless road...
Have you thought of getting a multieffect pedal? If you don't even know what you might want, you should learn a thing or two about pedals. Get a Korg AX3000B, Line6 POD X3, Boss ME50B or such, decide what stomp effects you like and get the pedals after that. Those things do not fully replicate the original tone but they're very close and usually people can't even tell if an effect is real or modeled without an A-B test (shut up you purists, they can't, really )

But I recommend the Bassballs as well, since, as Maki said, its probably the most "fun" pedal I've ever used. |

A Bassballs is on my list to try, I'm an envelope filter junkie... my latest (#8) is a Subdecay Prometheus, which they DON'T sell on Amazon unfortunately. The 'Balls seems a little different enough to be pretty unique.
I know you've got the Pastrami, but I'd still suggest a Sansamp Bass Driver. It's a tube-emulated overdrive that sounds great (you can get a good SVT-like sound) and it's a DI to boot. A very handy tool! I played bass for about 10 years before I got one and should have gotten one much sooner. It gets a lot of love around TB, too.
A Boss RC-2 Loop Station would be one that's on the more "fun" side... I really dig my RC-2. It's a very pedalboard friendly size (standard Boss pedal), but the tradeoff is that it takes a little more getting used to to control... It can still DO what the bigger Loop Stations do, but since it's as small as it is, it lacks some of the control switches that the bigger ones have. Still, VERY fun.
Another one that I've had a lot of fun with is the EHX Stereo Electric Mistress. Great chorus/flange and you can get some pretty cool, "way out there" sounds (particularly with the Fixed Matrix option).
Let's see... what else...
I recently bought a Boss PS-5 Super Shifter, which I've had some fun with too. I bought it for the Detune mode, which I use as a Chorus... I'm not a huge fan of the "warble" of traditional choruses. lol It's got a bunch of other functions as well, the Tremelo Arm mode is cool for some great dive bombs.
Those are some of the more "fun" ones I've had direct experience with anyway. I'll post some more if I can think of them.
5sg.
