Based on your description, I'm guessing that the ground on your jack is shorting to a wire on the tone pot. This would explain the sound being fixed by moving the jack and the sound going away by turning the tone pot all the way to one side.
Hard to say for certain, though. It is a crowded pedal, lots of things to touch to each other.
