In Flames-ish bass sound ? Tech21 RBI ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been really admiring Peter Irwing's bass sound lately, and really been wanting to get something that brings me close distortionish-sound wise.

I know for their latest album (A sense of purpose) They splitted the signal, into an ampeg on one hand, and into a Dimebag Distorion pedal and into a Ashdown on the other hand and blended to taste.
The bass sound on most of their later album is really nice. Come Clarity has some really nice, growling bass sound, but still retaining the punch.
The song Transparent at 1:26 has some pretty nice example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETnTsExfRIU

I've been trying out a few distortion pedals during rehersal, and altough some of them sound pretty sweet, they usually take to much of the punch and clarity (especially from the lower end)

During recording I've been using "Studio Devil Virtual Bass Amp" which has a tube-ish drive sound, and adding in front of that Logic's "Pedalboard" with some distortion effect, blended maybe 10/90 (10% being the distorted signal)

Now i'm looking for some way to get that hard, but tight "blended" distortion into my live rig. I'm playing a FBass BN5 into a Nemesis NA650 with 4x10" and 2x12" cabs, the amp sounds (well, to my ears at least) really nice, giving me half of the sound I'm looking for. Just missing the distortioned part.

Does anyone know what Peter is using for his live distortion ?

I've been thinking about the SansAmp RBI or Bass Driver DI (I usually prefer rack mounted gear in general, and the RBI has a footswitch option i could use live), since it could come in handy when i'm doing FOH mixing (which is pretty often) and for Recording. It has a blend a Drive and Blend button, so by the looks of it I should be able to get what I want.

The thing is, I don't really know how it sounds (but heard good things) and there is no store in iceland selling these (that I know of) so I can't really try it out?

If anyone could record a few samples for me that would be AWESOME. A dry signal, and then a few types of different drive and blend settings.

I know each bass and amp has it's own sound, but if I get a drive signal to compare I should be able to imagine what it would do to my sound.

Are there any other distortion pedals/rack units I should be looking out for. I've used a BigMuff Pi (american), tried the Boss MetalZone and Vox Bulldog, and some other random pedal's I've found.
I know the Bass BigMuff has a blend button, but I think it's a bit more "fuzz" than I'm looking at.

You're looking for the Tech 21 XXL bass edition. It'll get you that tone in spades. The BDDI is much less brutal.

You could always try out the Dime Distortion inside the loop of a blend pedal, it could do what you're after (actually, I wouldn't mind trying this out)

I did some goole work and found that Peter uses only two pedals live... Boss tuner and this http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....&CJPID=2502662

I dont know if he gets his distortion from that or his Ampeg (usa tours) or EBS fafner (EU tours)... I get really similar sound from my Ibanez PD-7 pedal. You should try that. Its cheap and really "Heavy" sounding

Thank you all for the answer, about the RBI, does anyone know if the Effect loop will be blendable with the DI signal, and being able to turn it off with a Footswitch.

Ok nice (don't really know why people use pedal tuners instead of rack tuners tough :P)

I really have something to go and try out at my next trip to the city

Still open for more suggestions if anyone has any input

here's a sample of the recording I made btw if anyone's interested (logic pedalboard with blender into Studio Devil Virtual Bass Amp)

If he uses an M-80, than I'd be pretty sure thats where he gets his tone. I know the guy from Killswitch says he sets his amps flat and uses a sansamp exculsively for tone, not the same band but in the same genre.

I use my bass big muff for dirt. with the blend, you can crank the sustain but leave the blend at about 40%. Also has a tone know which gets me a ton of punch.
I also use a Hartke Attack VXL which also lets you dial in "harmonics" tube emulation which also has a blend. Sweetens up the tone and gets extra harmonic grit.

I am not an In Flames fan, but that is a brutal bass sound. Nice.

if you need to tune mid set... its much easier to have a pedal tuner rather then walking all the way back to you rack... sometimes you cant even see your rack on stage so that would also be a problem.
