Flanger decisions...

I'm currently trying to decide on a flanger for my GAS list. My current choices are, in no particular order: Mr Black Tunnelworm, TC Electronic Vortex, and the SubDecay Starlight Quantum. I like the SD for its ability to conjure crazy sounds, the TC for its tweak-ability of classic flanger sounds, and the MB for its analog richness. Feel free to offer other suggestions, but not "don't get a flanger." Thanks.

Never underestimate the Boss BF-2, it's a classic for a reason! They come up in the classifieds CHEAP all the time, they're reliable, and they just sound great!

Any experience w/ the BF-3? Just saw they added a couple new modes plus a dedicated bass input.

The BF-3 has a colder, more artificial tonal quality to it. When I had one, I almost always used the guitar input because the bass input tended to be muddy to my ears.

I second this.
This or the Rocktron Hypnoflanger (If you can scrap one up cheap, I did). The delay in the Rocktron is, as far as I traced it, identical to the Boss BF-2, but the LFO section is a bit different. That said, I do find that the Rocktron has a bit too shallow of a sweep (but i'll address that the next time I have it opened up)

Either way flanger on bass is nice Do also consider one with an envelope follower, envelope flanging sounds maaaad nice

I had the Boss BF-3 for 6 years, and just buy the TC Electronic Vortex 100dls and the Boss BF-2 45dls to make a shootout and keep one in my pedalboard, so now i´m selling the Vortex and the BF-3 hahahah, If you want to go crazy use the TC Electronic Vortex if you just want to add some coulor like "Pictures of you" from The Cure go with BF-2 that has more a warm tone because is analog.

The BF-2 is fabulous. The new MXR Bass Chorus deluxe is amazing. Note there is a flanger switch so you get a great flanger plus a chorus!

I 've never experienced so much bass on chorus/flanger. Highly recommended.

For more extreme flanging the AD/A is great. Don't use it with a hot pick-up or an active bass, it saturates.

Looks like I'll be adding the BF-2 to the list

I have it on good authority that VFE will be working on an envelope flanger.

do look at Source Audio Orbital Modulator coming out this next week or so. It might be more $$ than you are planning, but it has envelope and LFO options, plus 9 different parameters to tweak. I've been making demo videos and will do the Flangers next. Bottom line it sounds awesome and a great value with the amount of fx you get. I wish I had a BF-2 to compare it with. I've been more of a Phaser guy

I agree. I have played the BF-3 for almost a year and just sold it and bought a BF-2 and it's much warmer and more natural to my ears. I was quite interested with the Vortex and although it seemed versatile it almost seemed like a little too much and it did not sound very natural IMO. Not to mention its 120$ and you can pick up a BF-2 for 50$

Love my old DOD FX72. Very organic and smooth, but still dramatic sounding. You can find them for usually around $40 used.

As stated above it's a classic and for good reason. It can do one hell of a pseudo chorus sound as well. One of the best pedals Boss ever made.

MXR M-117R is also very flexible- similar to the Boss BF-2, but the MXR is more expensive.

Thank goodness for this thread. I've been trying to sell my BF2, but this thread got me thinking of trying it again. Don't know what the hell got into me. Sounds beautiful on bass.
