Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, i really hope this is the right forum, if not i apologize.

Simply put, i want to know how to get this tone

Is he using some sort of effect or is it done with eq settings and technique?

Any input is appreciated and thanks in advance.

I don't hear SVT at all.

I hear the sound of a Jazz bass with GHS flats being played with a heavy touch near the bridge into a GK rig.

And since Rick Rubin (not to mention Flea) take a minimalist approach to recording I'm guessing that's a direct out from his rig to the board with no mic'd cabs or double tracking.

Isn't Flea a GK player?

Then again, back in the day he very well could have played an SVT

who really cares what he was using? seriously. it's a clean bass with a lot of string rattle. you can get that sound with practically anything.

That was pretty much the message of my post. Yes, he's using flats, but it's just a clean sound (from the GK) and a hard attack and nothing more.

ya, he's played ampegs off and on...i recently saw him using a 610hlf and a 4 pro on something. still, that's not a difficult sound to duplicate on anything. just dig in hard enough to get string rattle.

I hear a Deep Impact going into an original Brassmaster, with a harmony setting from a Bass Whammy going through a Jet Phaser...

But that's just me.

im not sure what he used back then but he has been using GK for a few years now. and they won't always use the amps they are endorcing in recordings, just like they don't always use there normal bass.

Yes, literally stacked on top of the other pedals.

Where do you think the term "tone stack" came from?

He's used a million different basses: Cutlass, Stingray, Wal, Alembic, Modulus, Jazz Bass his new Flea Bass, even a P-Bass but Flea has pretty much always used GK rigs for gigging and recording when it is left up to him. The BCS game and working with Mars Volta are two notable exceptions.
